james jackson toth is wooden wand, and vice versa, i suppose. his 2010 release, death seat, clocked in at number 17 on my top 20 from said year. at the time, or at least pertaining to that release, i believe i likened him to a southern preacher passing judgment on all of us. it seemed as if hell fire were right behind him, and if we didnt fall in line, all of us were going to be subjected to eternal damnation. things have changed…
his latest release, briarwood – due out on 11.22 on fire records, which is being put under the moniker of wooden wand and the briarwood virgins is a record that should not, i repeat should not, be ignored, or i guess overlooked. for some reason it reminds me of that phosphorescent record that came out last year, except 100 times better and more authentic. this time around he brought my man duquette johnston and his gum creek killers along for the ride, and again not sure if its mr johnston’s influence that brought upon the drastic change, but whatever it is/was, its very very welcome. this is not to downplay or diminish any of his other work, but damn if i heard this a week ago, it probably would’ve landed in my “premature top 10″ list. the record was produced by johnston and les nuby (vulture whale, ex-verbena). top make it even sweeter it was mastered by matt pence of centro-matic. absolute top ten/5 material. love it long time…
