blow up wilco, and start anew tweedy, i beg of you. ok, you can keep john and glenn, but the other three dudes gotta go. if you were to tell me back in 94/95 that in 2011 i would no longer give a shit about wilco, i would have slapped ya in the face and kicked in the balls, or vagina. sadly, its gotten to that point though. still with that said, i dont think there was a finer band on the planet than said band from their inception till whenever the hell a ghost was born was released. the whole love, i will admit, is better than their last two, but still pretty forgettable. oh, and for the record, regarding this matter, there is no budging or hemming and hawing, so hold your brea jeff we can still be best friends, please come back…

I’m really liking the new album. If you sour on Wilco, see them live… you go in cynical and leave real impressed. I rarely seem them anymore as they have grown into venues way too big for my liking. I made an exception a couple of years ago and they were something.
my only problem with the see them live argument is that i have, and no doubt they fuckin are brilliant live, no doubt. sadly, the live moments are only passing, the records on the other hand live forever. the new record isnt bad, but srsly tweedy doent do the whole “art-rock” thing very well. i dont even know if i would consider it “art-rock” but its definitely leaning that way. i have zero problems with a band progressing and growing, but if the records arent up to snuff, then well…. maybe im just missing the point?
Hey Gregor-
I’m right there with you. I’ve been longing for a blow-up and re-do since after “Sky Blue Sky”, and this talk of Tweedy’s contentment with the lineup stability isn’t helping my outlook. There’s no law that we need to march forward in lockstep, me and Wilco, and certainly folks are loving the new batch, but it leaves me cold. Not hating the past couple releases but more likely to pull an “EP” from them than going back to ‘em in full.
Good point also on the “live vs/ studio” discussion. Having seen them tour behind most of their releases, I must note that the live shows aren’t a lock and in fact, the most recent show I saw (NOLA Jazz/ Heritage Fest this year) seemed pretty phoned-in and a bit of an F-you to the crowd.
Maybe it’s about time for Uncle Tupelo to get back together and tour some small clubs.
ha ha absolutely… i can get behind that.
Hi, captain, have you become deaf, really? Are you tied to the mast? TWL is nearly a masterpiece. Try it again and don’t fall in superficial music browsing.
Anyway, thanks a lot for your excellent site.
Eggman, thanks for the kind words, but when it comes to wilco I don’t participate in superficial music browsing. At one time my fave band hands down, so I still give me the benefit of the doubt and multiple listens before making statements. Glad you like it so much, awesome, but i don’t. I won’t stoop to calling you deaf.
My apologies Greg. Cheers.
no reason to apologize, but thanks. i understand the passion…
Captain, you’ve brought me so much joy through your posts so I won’t complain too much. I’ll just add to the live argument and say the evening I saw them play at the ballpark in Coney Island was one of the best concert nights I’ve had since seeing Uncle Tupelo say goodbye at the Blue Note. Should I further complicate matters by saying “A.M.” is still my favorite album? Probably not.
jason, no doubt they are at their best live, at least in their present form. live though, like i said, is a fading memory, these records that sit on my harddrive, in teh cloud, and in their cases will last forever, hopefully.
i have no qualms with a.m. being your fave, although out the gate, trace was a much better record, but thats another argument.
I didn’t notice you tags first time around. Halfway between genius and teenager.
Trace is better than A.M. in so many ways. Kind of like Uncle Tupelo cut loose on the open road. Time has shown, though, that despite Tweedy’s own problems he was the happy guy in the duo. Farrar became the worst kind of downer. When I listen to his stuff now I just want to show him a sunset or a puppy or something other than the abandoned truck stop where he seems to reside now.
I hear that. YHF was the last great thing they did and the firing of Bennett was the nail in their coffin. I haven’t followed Wilco since I watched Tweedy’s inexplicable treatment of Jay in the Trying to Break Your Heart movie. And mind, you, I’ve been a Tweedy fan since Still Feel Gone was released. A couple of months ago I picked up their newest album at a Starbucks, figuring I’d give them another chance. I almost threw the CD out of the window of my car. Wow. What is this crap? I couldn’t even get past the first song. Anyway, I think Jeff’s got two options now: 1) fade away quietly and leave us with the memories of Being There and Mermaid Avenue or 2) call up Mr. Farrar, mend the fences and arrange a reunion. THAT I’d actually care about.
