what i am listening to right now: maria taylor’s ladyluck

by gregor on May 15, 2011

sometimes, well actually most of the time, unless a name is ingrained into my tiny brain, i have a hard time remembering names. i happened to see jason isbell talking to a young lady by the name of maria taylor on twitter this morning. assuming isbell keeps good company, i figured out i would check out the first record of hers i could get my hands on, and that happened to be her 2010 release, lady luck. now after listening to the first three/four songs i figured i’d google her, and see what she’s all about. yeah, here’s where that ignorance comes into play. turns out she’s part of azure ray, now its overhead and has played w crooked fingers and bright eyes to name a few. this is when i start saying to myself, oh yeah thats where i knew the name from, but prior to this her name may has well have been stacy lopez – which of course means nothing to me. the more i read on, her songs have appeared all over tv, which i would have course missed cause i only watch dora, sponge bob, and other nickoledeon and cartoon network shows. about the record, it’s very “something” and that “something” i cant quite put my finger on. its mostly an acoustic based record, but there are a lot of non-organic aka electronic sounds that fill in the spaces. i am definitely digging it, cause i quite fancy her voice. granted i have only heard this record, but i would to hear a record by her thats stripped down w just her voice, an acoustic guitar and a live backing band recorded in a warehouse. me thinks that would be pretty awesome.

I agree – her voice is very nice. She might do better by dropping the poppy production BS on this song, however. Very annoying.
Regards, Dave.

yeah some of the production is way too glossy for my liking, which is a shame cause the songs themselves are real solid.
