venice is sinking vs lorrie matheson vs it hugs back
i’m going to do a bit of a roundup of a few bands that i have been meaning to get to, but thus far havent.
lets start off with athens’ venice is sinking and their recently released, azar. im probably the only person in the blogoweird that hasnt heard it – may have to do the unimaginable and actually buy it! gasp! the general consensus, from all the reviews i have read, is that its pretty great – that is if you dig the likes of low, galaxie 500, sea and cake, and maybe even the cinematic nature of the dirty three.
EDIT: forgot to mention that they are playing tonight @ kavarna in decatur, ga. five bucks gets you in and a copy of azar. what recession?
i have listened to, and really enjoy, calgary’s lorrie matheson’s in vein. its a record that at first sounds kind of all over the place, and that first impression would be correct, but all the different stylings, ranging from new orleans street jazz to folk to experimental, work in lovely harmony. definitely recommended for fans of sparklhorse, ron sexsmith, richard buckner, etc.
im so confused by it hugs back and their record, inside your guitar. on one hand its quite a cool collection of early 90’s indie rock ala yo la tengo and teenage fanclub. on the other hand it sounds like the band has a bit of an identity crisis or maybe leaning on their influences way too freakin hard that it sounds much more contrived than it needs to be. still a good record… inside your guitar comes out on tuesday, 4.7 on 4ad.
