sometimes i get in moods to do “actual” reviews of albums, cause i think some records deserve it. these “reviews” usually start off pretty well, and i get pretty psyched, feeling pretty good. its typically sometime around paragraph 3 that it all turns to unreadable drivel. when i feel the review start turning towards this, i typically delete the offending review and give you what you have come to expect, reviews in the vein of 75 or less. sadly, i really dont have the focus to compose lengthy reviews any more. if i were getting paid, that would be another story.

which brings me to, my son’s home, the new record by the roadside graves, and maybe my favorite record of the year thus far. let me get this outta the way first, if i were to ever make a record i would want to sound exactly like my son’s home. i was a bit skeptical when i learned it was comprised of 18 tracks cause lets be honest its hard to pull off successfully. fuck me, if my “worries” werent shot and then burried in a deep, deep hole. one thing i love about this record, and something that i think is a lost art form of sorts, is that its tracked beautifully. none of the songs sound out of place, or is there a question of “why would they put this song after this song?” i have actually changed track listings in the past, i have to admit. this is not a record that you are just going to sit down once and “get it,” each listen unveils something new and thus the appreciation/love deepens. to these ears, its a damn near perfect record. undoubtedly and strongly recommended!! do it!

my son’s home is out now on autumn tone

  1. Josh says:

Come on Greg – push past the third-paragraph wall. You can do it.

    Nice sounds though.

  2. [...] Captain’s Dead calls it one of the albums of the year! [...]
