will oldham on kusf, san francisco

gregor | March 18th, 2009 - 12:28 pm

will-oldham

been listening to mr will oldham and his many monikers quite a bit lately. one thing i have come to realize about his music that i didnt when i started listening to him, many moons ago, is that while most of his songs sound absolutely dreadful and solemn they are actually quite uplifting, in a sense. just started to understand this about him and his work recently. anyone else get that same feeling?

here he is as will oldham performing on kusf-fm, san francisco on 10.8.98.

in rar format

1. song for the new breed
2. another day full of dread
3. ohio river boat song
4. three photographs
5. all babies
6. new gypsy
7. antagonism
8. marriage
9. nomadic revery

his most excellent, beware, was released yesterday via drag city.

here’s the video for “i am goodbye” which was directed by leif johnson, and edited by jennifer parsons.

on golden smog

golden-smog.jpg

top of the morning, peoples. any of you see iron man this weekend? i did and it was every bit as awesome, if not more, than the trailer led me to believe it was going to be. i also happened to watch a little documentary called the king of kong: fistful of quarters. it helped me develop an even greater hatred for billy mitchell, who if you dont know is the only person to get a perfect score on pac man and btw he is a fucking asshole douchebag. i definitely recommend checking out both flicks, both for obviously different reasons.

hey, will oldham and his bonnie prince billy moniker has a new record, lie down in the light, coming out shortly on drag city. you can pre-order it here. here’s a demo of “so, everyone” which is on lie down in the light.

so, everyone (demo)

i really dug the first two clinic records, internal wrangler and walking with thee, but havent listened to anything since. mostly due to the fact that i heard they were crap. they got a new one coming out shortly entitled do it and i am really liking the single so i may have to check it out. anyone hear it as of yet?

as far as i am concerned there have been only two supergroups worth the weight of their collective egos. the first and probably the greatest being the traveling wilburys and second are these fine collection of men, golden smog. as i sit here i am trying to think of other supergroups and for the life of me, cant. probably better off that way. i know there has to be more, though. wasnt their some metal supergroup in the late 80′s that don dokken may have been apart of? lets not forget about the ted nugent and tommy shaw collaborative, damn yankees. yeah..

here they are, golden smog, @ cat’s cradle on 4. 18.96

1. intro

2. v

3. ill fated

4. glad and sorry

5. yesterday cried

6. walk where he walked

7. signed d.c. (love)

8. backstreet girl (rolling stones)

9. nowhere bound

10. (what’s so funny ’bout) peace, love and understanding (nick lowe)

11. he’s a dick

12. pecan pie

13. friend

14. hanging on the telephone (blondie)

15. the most beautiful girl (charlie rich)

16. won’t be coming home

17. love and mercy (brian wilson)

18. red headed stepchild

anyone see kenny vs spenny? thus far i have only had the opportunity to check out the farting episode, and as much as i love fart based humor, the show as quite annoying. sure, i laughed out loud at numerous times throughout the episode it got to the point where i just wanted to gag. which i suppose is maybe the point. i loved the underwear/heat sensor visual, but there was still no for me to have ever witnessed such and experiment. i dont see it lasting very long, but drawn together still lives so there is hope for just about anything.

baby dee seems to be quite the character, literally. at first i was not even sure what gender dee was, it would turn out that dee is indeed a she. but, based on first impressions i was unsure whether dee was some kind of stage act or parody, both being not by type of thing. as it turns out, baby dee is pretty right on. kind of a melding of waits old world charm and stephin merritt eccentricities. she’s got a new will oldham and matt sweeney produced(they also play) record entitled safe inside the day coming out on drag city on 1.22.08. guests on the record include andrew wk, robbie lee, max moston (antony and the johnsons), william breeze (psychic tv), john contreras (current 93), james lo (chavez) and lia kessel. here’s the first single from safe inside the day.

there were many, actually lets just say between the years of 94 – 04, an evening was spent in bars scattered throughout chicago neighboorhoods. one thing i love about chicago is that in the winter you drink cause there isnt much else to do, and then in the summer you drink cause, well, its summer. anyway, my point is this, chicago’s morning recordings reminds me of the dark end of the bar. the perfect place to chill and just let everything going on just pass you by. think yo la tengo on codeine with a splash of some dream pop band, if thats possible. their new record the welcome kinetic is out now, i believe. check em out…

welcome to costco, i love you

gregor | September 23rd, 2007 - 5:02 am

in an interesting turn of events, the captains dead compound will soon, in 7 months, have a new member. thats right, my bride is expecting our second child. just when i thought i was just about done wiping ass and making vain attempts at explaing the universe, i get pulled right back in. this is all from a guy and a gal that never expected to have one, let alone two. i blame my wife! i told her that if she wasnt such a slut we wouldnt be having these little happy accidents. she laughed. no, seriously she did.

in other news, i am unfortunately going to have to start deleting a lot of older stuff. this is due to quite a few pains in my ass that refuse to stop the leeching. i am blowing through about 20 gigs a day when i should only do about 5. so, anything older than 4 months old will be going away over the next few days. there will be no way for me to recover this stuff cause i just dont have the time to download everything. its just much easier to delete the stuff.

how awesome would it be to live in a tree house?

half way through listening to former athenian phosphorescent’s pride, i got this weird vision in my head that i was sitting in some church and a through the black couds shown a light directly on me, kinda like what happened to jake in the blues brothers. pride has this really strange, but uplifting, other worldly quality that is hard to deny. there is something very church like about pride. the vocals seem to reach to the heavens, but the music seems to be from the dirt – if that makes any sense. pride is one of those special kinda records that you dont want to share with anyone, but want to preach to the masses about from the top of a mountain. not to sound overly queer, but pride left me kinda stunned. i wasnt expecting this at all and i actually sat there motionless for a few moments once it was finished. that is something that hasnt happened since my first listen to bee thousand – which happens to be my favorite record of all time. if i dont listen to another record this year that would probably be ok with me. as a reference point, i would say that pride is part graceland era paul simon, beach boys’ pet sounds and will oldham’s ease on down the road.

pride is being released on oct 23 – i believe. he’s currently doing a bunch of shows, so check his myspace page for details.

daytrotter has an interview with matthhew houck, who is phosphorescent, and in typical daytrotter fashion have a couple of live tracks available.

i found this pumpkins bootleg the other day and found it to be kinda cool. i dont know much about it but its entitled “may we have a record contract, please.” according to some sources this is a demo collection circa 1989 which is pre gish.

man, i forgot how great sings greatest palace music is. admittedly, i was a bit skeptical upon hearing that he was remaking his own stuff, but i’ll be damned if most of the remakes arent better than the originals. still, viva last blues is still his piece de resistance in my opinion.

so, here is will oldham when he was still using the palace moniker performing @ headliners in louisville on 7.17.99
