i rarely question, or second guess stuff i post, but when it comes to certain artists, who are controlled by majors, it makes me rethink my position. sometimes though, i just really dont care. the worst thing thats gonna happen is that they tell me to take it down. big whup!
with that all said, my main man, gord downie of the tragically hip is back with a new record entitled the grand bounce. its not a gordon downie record, but a gord downie & the country of miracles record, fyi. at this point, the man and his music should need no introduction and/or explanation. just accept that he’s one of the best songwriters of our time, assume the record is gonna follow suit, and in this case all of this is true.
not sure if its on sale in the states yet, as amazon is selling as an import. its prob avail through itunes, im assuming. he’s also touring, but of course nowhere near any of us in the states, of course unless you live near the canadian border.
hidy ho neighbors! i happened across this set of early hip demos which i never new existed. i guess that doesnt make me much of a tragically hip fan? i forgot the details at home but apparently some tape showed up on ebay, and this is that tape. they, i believe, are taken pre their 87 self titled debut. they’re a bit rough in some spots, mostly due to tape hiss, but all in all still very listenable and its interesting to hear the origins of some of my most beloved songs.

here’s the first single off we are the same.

well, what the hell is up peoples? if you are checking in from sxsw, i hope you are having a swell time. from all accounts it seems as if everyone is having a rollicking good time. i dont care what i have to do, next year i will be there. i would love to do a captains dead presents type of thing, and may try to reach out to some other folks to try and make that happen. i got a year, so you never know.
this one has been sitting on a hard drive i forgot i had. turns out it has been sitting at the bottom of a storage bin for at least 6 years. was happy to see that it still worked cause there’s a bunch of great stuff on it. this is a tragically hip boot entitled roxy and elsewhere. this version of “new orleans is sinking” is particularly killer and quite entertaining.

one gig i would love to have is that of a re-enactment actor. could you get any lower on the acting food chain then this? porno may involve more depth. are these people too ugly to get into porno? the only acting qualification i see one having to possess is the ability to overact badly. who are these people? do they have agents, head shots, do they take classes? i dont know what got me thinking about these folks but it probably involved alcohol. does anyone know one of these creatures?
wanted to give a big thanks to ryan at muzzle of bees for including yours truly in his “get to know your blogger” feature. so, if you feel like knowing a bit more about me head on over there, or even if you dont give a shit about me, head over there anyway cause he does a helluva job.
anyone hear m wards “i go home” in one of the new mlb commercials? i thought it was pretty cool. although, its quite lame that its a remake.
in other news, one of my favorite records of the past couple years shadows rise by travel by sea has found a new home on mr drunkards autumntone records. their upcoming release, days of my escape will also be released on autumntone sometime later this summer, i think.

i love it when members of bands of differing styles come together and create. such is the case with auxilary house, a musical collective featuring members of, but not limited to, the never, lost in the trees, vibrant green and a few other trekky records artists. i have only heard “animal song” from play more games by the 12 piece, but according to the info provided their stylings range from “raucous country romps, brass fanfare, sparse folk tunes, avant-appalachia, irreverent twee pop, orchestral flirtations, and psychedelic rock songs..” which all sounds right up my alley.
they are currently on a east coast tour on a 44 person bus that has been converted to run on vegetable oil. pretty cool. they are also going to be taking part in team clermont’s prom in athens later this summer.

on aug 7 or 21, i have differing dates, chapel hill based schooner, will be releasing hold on too tight. hold on too tight holds the distinction of sounding both familiar and foreign. the combination of the recording, “indie rock” instrumentation, and early motown and country influences makes hold on too tight sound like a childhood i never had but might have. hold on too tight is a warm record, but in a wrapped in a blanket in front of a fire listening to a shitty am radio kinda way. none of this probably makes sense but sometimes its kinda hard to explain the vibe a record gives off, such is the case of hold on too tight, cause what i may hear/feel, you may not and vice versa. its not a complicated record, per se, but then again it is. to quote j mascis ” i dont know man, you decide.”
one thing i do know, and this is me being a typical man, is that both the ladies in schooner are quite attractive.

not too sure about the history, if there is any, of this collection of tragically hip acoustic numbers entitled phantom acoustics. i am sure its just a fan collaborated collection, which is cool with me cause its great either way.
these can now be found here. [...]
Tags: autumn tone, auxilary house, muzzle of bees, schooner, the tragically hip, travel by sea, trekky recordsa band that i dont talk about really ever, but are quietly in my top 5 favorite bands, is canada’s the tragically hip. one thing i love about the hip is that there is little to no ego in their music, but its still cool as hell. as great as musicians as they are, lead singer gordon downie really makes the the hip, well the hip. he’s reminds me of a crazy history teacher that has some crackpot theories on shit and that has smoked way to much weed or still does. no tragically hip record sounds like the one before it, they dont stray far from their formula but there always seems to be a distinct and differnt vibe to each record.
i actually won a contest back in 2000 to film and hang with the hip when they played in chicago. unfortunately, my video is no longer up but you can read my drunken rambling, here.
this is show from 12.??.1989. no one seems to know exactly when this show took place except that it was close to christmas, that it was in 89 and in toronto. the usually reliable hip base doesnt even have a clue.
