blitzen trapper’s furr

gregor | September 3rd, 2008 - 1:34 am

i was a big fan of blitzen trapper’s last record, wild mountain nation, and as it turns out i am becoming an even bigger fan of their upcoming release, furr. this one is definitely more focused, maybe due in part to their recent sub pop signing who knows, but it is definitely welcomed. they are musically all over the map, ranging from 90′s lo-fi, pyche-folk, alt-country, and a bunch of other dashes i cant think of at the moment. regardless of their psychitzophrenic nature nothing on furr seems out of place, though their may be a few what the fuck moments sprinkled throughout but they only add to the records many charms. furr is out on the 23rd of september.

riyl: grateful dead, dylan, pavement, eagles?, avett bros, etc…

make sure you check out their daytrotter session from late last year.

chad vangaalen and his soft airplane

gregor | August 28th, 2008 - 11:58 pm

chad vangaalen is a cool cat. he’s like a young bob pollard. actually he’s really nothing like uncle bob except that they both have a penchant for recording on 4 tracks or other random analog equipment and crafting strangely hummable pop songs. case in point, chad’s new record, soft airplane, was recorded primarily on an old tape machine and a jvc ghetto blaster or at least thats what subpop would lead you to believe. either way, he’s kinda all over the map not so much in styles but in instrumentation and is very reminiscent of the early elephant 6 days of elf power, olivia tremor control, nmh, the music tapes, etc. i have really really dug his past records, infiniheart and skelliconnection and judging by the first single off soft airplane i am sure my fanboy status will keep on, keepin on.

btw, sub pop and flemish eye are also offering a bonus limited edition cd-r featuring three songs, including a new track and two 1-man-band versions of songs from soft airplane to anyone who pre-orders the album by september 9th.

tell me what you see

gregor | July 18th, 2008 - 10:37 pm

here’s two records i have been looking forward to and both are pretty solid through my first couple of listens.

ex-slowdive and mojave 3′er, neil halstead’s oh! mighty engine comes out on brushfire records, which may be owned by jack johnson, on 7.29. honestly, its more of the same from neil but i can deal with more of the same when the songs are this lovely. oh! mighty engine finds him treading more and more into nick drake territory, which again is all good with me.

brooklyn’s oxford collapse’s bits is a great collection of that jangly/ringing guitar and fractured timing 90′s inspired indie rock that i am sucker for and is out on sub pop 8.5.

Autobots wage their battle to destroy the evil forces of the deceptions

gregor | March 9th, 2008 - 10:18 am

sera.jpg

i have been absolutely smitten with sera cahoone since i happened across her 06 debut last year. i had no idea that she had a new one coming out. so when i happened across it the other day, i immediately got a starchy. her voice is absolutely gorgeous, but not in the classic boring sense, but in the i would like to make sweet, passionate and possibly awkward love to it kinda way. like a lot of records that fall into the folk and countryish genres, the record is filled with lapsteel, harmonica, fiddle and gentle acoustic strummings but it all wraps so beautifully around her voice. all this combined with her knack for penning some lovely lyrics, puts sera above 98 percent of her counterparts.

her new one, only as the day is long is coming out on the 18th on sub pop.

dead or alive, you are coming with me

live at debaser, stockholm, sweden, 2005-03-15. (c) anders jensen-urstad

sup, tards? anything going on this weeks end? me? i got nothin, except a whole lot of studying and hopefully a few beers thrown in along the way.

been listening to the new grand archives record for the past couple of days and have had an interesting time with it, thus far. after spinning just the first couple of tracks i was kinda left feeling a little down, but as the album marched forward, the better it got. which, of course, is usually quite the opposite of most records. still, i am kinda iffy on the first few tracks, but as the listen count rings up, i am sure i will come around. maybe i was just unfairly wishing, hoping and expecting a band of horses type record, which its not. its more carissa’s wierd than boh, which is just fine with me.

their sub pop debut is landing on 2.19.08

i got an email a while back from a dear reader, that i accidentally deleted in a mass purging of my inbox, that recommended i check out seattle’s fleet foxes. or atleast i think someone emailed me about em. never mind my shitty memory, fleet foxes bring to mind 70′s am radio, if only i had ever heard 70′s am radio. so, i guess they sound like what i think it would sound like. now, they aint retro by any means, they just got this latter day vibe to em. they recently signed to sub pop and i think you can buy their full length and ep via their myspace page – i think. man, i have covered 3 sub pop bands in the past two days. i cant deny they put out quality stuff.

doctor, doctor, doctor, doctor, doctor, doctor, doctor, and doctor

gregor | January 31st, 2008 - 8:34 am

good day, people. let me ask you a question, feel free to answer. am i the only man living with a woman who has a hard time dispensing the toilet paper directly into the toilet after wiping? just about every morning when i open the door to the toilet area, there is toilet paper either on the seat or on the floor. anybody else face this issue? its not annoying, actual its quite comical. i just dont understand how she can miss. i know when i am done wipin my ass i dont ever just randomly throw the shit-laden tp into the air and hope for the best. whatever…

speaking of piss, im kinda late to the game with this collection of dudes who call themselves, humorously enough, pissed jeans. i only pissed myself once and it so happened to be in the middle of toys r us when i was six. i remember it like it was yesterday cause we were killing time before going to see empire strikes back and i was too wrapped up in checking out the newest star wars action figures to pay my screaming bladder any mind. yep, so i just pissed myself right there in the middle of the aisle. i know i’m not the only one. anyway, back to sub pop’ pissed jeans, who as far as i can tell sound like a lovely pairing of mudhoney and jesus lizard – two bands not enough bands cop a sound from. check em out.
