the story of silkworm trailer
its not very often that a band likens themselves to silkworm. or, at very least claims them as an influence. which is actually a damn shame, cause quite frankly i think that silkworm for being just a 3 piece rock band had one of the most distinct sounds i have ever heard. i cant say i have heard a band that sounds remotely like em. anyway, so when a release came across my inbox that claimed texas’ the garys claim such an influence, i had to check em out. now, they aint the second coming of silkworm, kinda as i had hoped, but they’re pretty right on. dave norwood’s every man vocal stylings is something you may have to warm up to, but the songs are solid, and actually found myself listening to these two tracks at a dozen times whilst writing this. which, honestly, is about 10 more than i give most stuff that gets pushed to my inbox.
their new ep, chub, is out now me thinks…
damn machines

seeing this, this being an upcoming silkworm documentary, kinda made me feeling quite nostalgic and even a little misty-eyed. listening to everyone from albini to malkmus to robbie fulks to adam reach(touch n’ go) speaking, so eloquently and passionately, the words that i have always thought, but couldn’t quite articulate, started me thinking about their music quite a bit. i know their footprint on musical history is quite small, but their impact, to the people that love em, is huge. the strange thing about silkworm is that they sound like no one and no one sounds like them – which is quite the feat considering they’re a 3 piece with nothing more than your standard guitar, bass and drums setup. what made them incredibly special is that, like fulks said in the trailer, “there’s no costumes, there’s no act, there’s no schtick.” they were just three dudes that made incredibly heartfelt and honest music no matter how deep you had to scratch to get there.
more info on the silkworm documentary couldn’t you wait can be found here and here on myspace. also, here is a collection of interviews including tweedy, malkmus and albini.
here is a brief introduction to the silkworm catalogue, most of which can be found on emusic or get off yr lazy arse and get down to your local shop and pick up an album or two. what a novel fucking idea.
