captains dead top 12 songs of 08
as i was coming up with my favorite songs of 08 i noticed an interesting trend. that trend being that most of my favorite songs were not necessarily on my favorite records. so, i decided to compile a list of my favorite songs that weren’t on my top album list. out of the 12 here, only about 4 would have been omitted by including tracks found on my favorite records.
two of the albums, in particular were real close to getting into the top ten. first one being, horse feathers’ house with no home which is a lovely collection of americana, that fans of great lake swimmers, iron and wine, bon iver, etc would really dig. the other being why?’s alopecia which, while a great record, i can only listen if i am in the right mood. it gets a little long in the tooth, when completely sober, but damn if it aint a great drinkin record…
these are in no particular order. although if i had to pick, it would be between the bottom three. you may axe yourself, “a milli?” really? yeah, i fuckin love that song… it be bangin and sounds so sweet comin out of the elantra’s boomin system.

i dont want to sound like too much of a puss, but thalia zedek could probably kick my ass and if not my ass she could definitely put a hurt on smangs ass. probably yours too. so, dont fuckin push her. i dont know of a voice that tells more of a story than the one belted out by thalia. she sounds like she’s scene every shithole bar, drank the nastiest of whiskeys and doused her smokes with shards of glass. the broad’s got soul and thats one of the highest compliments i can pay someone.
thalia has a new record out on thrilljockey entitled liars and prayers.
saints around my neck off come’s most excellent gently down the stream and this song kicks all kinds of ass.

add kurt wagner into my top 5 artists i would love to have a smoke and share some beers with. he just seems as if he would be an awesome bullshitter with tons of hilarious stories to tell. that simple assumption alone puts him near the top of my “get fucked up with” wishlist.
here is the lambchop lineup for this particular show @ the great american music hall which took place on 1.16.99. paul burch / john delworth / mark nevers / paul niehaus / mark trovillion / deanna varagona

the men and ladies over at line of best fit recently unveiled their monthly mix tape so why the hell not check it out.
oh, yeah. one of my favorite music sites, coke machine glow just recently re-launched.
one of my top 3 favorite bands, centro-matic, is doing something pretty cool for their upcoming dual hawks, which is a two record set with the other record being of the south san gabriel variety. they are looking for submissions from fans on what centro-matic’s music means to them and it should be “more than a quote but less than a thesis.” i dont know if more than one person will be selected for the grand prize cause its worded strangely, but this is pulled from the email i got “selected submission will receive a free copy of the super-fancy limited-edition deluxe version of dual hawks, a t-shirt, and 2 tickets to a show of your choice in 2008 (except sxsw or other festivals where we don’t control the tickets).” interested? send your submission to bob@undertowmusic.com before 2.22.08 to be entered, and make sure to put centro-matic in the subject line. if for some reason you still havent checked em out here some choice stuff..

pacificUV, their name at least, sounds vaguely familiar. it may be all due to this kind of scenario. sometimes when i recieve press releases and their band to another band, sometimes i can only hear the other band. such is the case with pacificUV and the mentioning of spacemen 3. they are by no means rippin the legendary 3 off, but merely re-interpreting their sound, but there’s no denying the similarities. sure, i have only listened to this track thus far, but i really look forward to hearing the whole deal, which is entitled long player 2 and due on 4.1.08. i really dig the galaxy 5 “tugboat” type horn explosion on “need.”

i have been on a huge lambchop kick as of late. one of the many brilliant things about em is that each record is like hearing a cliff noted history lesson on the last 50 or so years of music. if you were just to read about, and not listen to, each lambchop record they would sound like an absolute mess, but when wagner and his extra large band put it down, its pure magic.
here is an absolutely stunning recording of lambchop in madrid @ teatro colloseum, on 12. 12.06. much love to the original taper.
