happy afternoon, all. i aint got much for ya today except this track from the upcoming iron and wine comp, around the well which is due out on 5.19 – its available as a double disc or triple vinyl set. clicky here for more info. here’s a a bit more about it via the subpop press page. btw, he is also doing a 10 show, 5 city tour this summer. me thinks the subpop page has all that info, too.
Collecting songs ranging from out-of-print to never-before-released, Around the Well spans Iron and Wine’s earliest sessions which yielded the band’s debut (2002’s The Creek Drank the Cradle) through material recorded for 2007’s The Shepherd’s Dog. The double-disc Around the Well collection is broken up into two sections. The first half is an assortment of hushed home recordings, unedited and raw, and the second highlights moments captured in the confines of proper studios with the help of other musicians, friends and engineers.
as a reminder, mogwai are playing at the republic in new orleans this evening. i got an extra ticket if anyone cares to awkwardly join me….

go bears!? ugh…
i still cant get over how awesomely hilarious sunday nights season opener of family guy was. i knew they were doing something star wars related but i didnt know that they were pretty much running through all of episode iv. very very cool.
lookin for something to do this fine evening in atlanta? well, the sea and cake are playing at the earl at 9ish, probably wont be more like 11 until they go on. then animal collective plays at the variety tomorrow evening. i am still vey much on the fence regarding my opinion of animal collective. although, the new one is supposed to be pretty good? anyone hear it yet?
the more i listen to iron and wine’s “boy with a coin” from the shepherds dog i become more convinced that its probably my favorite song of the year. for all 4 of you that have somehow not participated in the iron and wine frenzy, check it!
woman king from the woman king ep
the shepherds dog is out today and its definitely a contender for record of the year.
i like this kid, markland starkie, and his sleeping states. he states that he has a real issue with the whole singer-songwriter genre and finds it “cheesy beyond belief.” now, i am not to sure what he’s doing to change anyone’s perceptions of the dreaded singer-songwriter genre but it sounds good to me.
sleeping states’ there the open spaces was released last week on misra

if daytrotter isnt the best music site on the interwebs please point out which one is. i seriously dont think you will find one. they have a repeat performance by one of my recent favorites, catfish haven. if you havent checked them boys out yet now’s your chance to do so either here or there.

its been a long ass time since i have done something gbv related. mostly due to not having a huge quality selection to choose from, at least the avenues i travel, and well thats probably it. so today is the aborted gbv record, circa 1995, the power of suck. now from all accounts, the power of suck, was going to be a concept record about the mediocre rise to success that gbv garnered after bee thousand and going into alien lanes. its all folklore at this point but check the gbv database for further details.

i dont know about you people but i have been shit tired the past couple of days. not really feeling motivated to do much of nothing. dont know if its the weather or the overnight hours or the lack of newcastle or sweetwater flowing through my veins but i feel like i could fall over at any moment.
the kamikaze hearts have a new track, “pompadour,” streaming on their myspace page at the moment. tangled up! and one little indian have released their wonderful/my favorite record of the 06, oneida road, in the uk and europe and “pompadour” is included in these releases. in case you are new to this here location and have never heard the kamikaze hearts before here are two tracks off of oneida road.
whilst viewing the hearts myspace page i ran across an interesting band comprised of two dames and a gent straight outta johnson city, tn who call themselves the everybody fields. not breaking any new ground but the three tracks they got up are really great, very much like a more southern fried iron and wine. the guy sam quinn has got a isaac brock love it or hate it type of voice, btw.
if you have been visiting this joint for any amount of time you will know that i love all things bob mould, well everything except modulate. so, with that said i dont feel like i have to go into or justify my love at this point.
here is bob playin in austin at liberty lunch on 10.21.89. the second half will be posted tomorrow.
1. sunspots
2. wishing well
3. compositions for the young and old
8. i cant figure this one out thats not the track title, i seriously cant figure it out. i know i have heard it before but cant put my finger on it. a little help, por favor?
9. poison years
10. sinners and their repentances
11. lonely afternoon
12. stand guard

whats up people? its been a pretty boring week around these parts, at least for me. my wife, on the other hand, has been given the opportunity to create a munu for a new restaurant opening up in ventura, ca. her best friend’s sister is the owner of a couple of joints in the area and is looking for a chef, which my wife is, from chicago to open and create a menu for his new space. so, its kinda exciting but i am not going to hold my breathe. i have always wanted to live in california, and this might just be our opportunity.
i am totally backlogged on bands that i need to write about. sadly, i have found little inspriation/energy to write much of any substance as of late. one band that i think are quite interesting is the soft complex, straight outta d.c. the soft complex features ex members of burning airlines – ex j robbins band, phaser and trixie delicious, the later bands i have never heard of, but that doesnt mean much. from the one track i have heard, they have a guitar sound kinda reminiscent of early day duran duran – which i dig. i am interested in hearing the whole ep, entitled barcelona.
here is a recent iron and wine show live from the fabulous city of milwaukee, recorded live at the pabst theatre on 2.08.07. the show features 9 brand spankin new songs.
1. intro
2. banter
3. die
4. banter
6. banter
8. banter (annouces new album)
9. pagan angel and borrowed a car
10. banter
12. banter
13. free until they cut me down
14. banter
15. house by the sea
16. banter
thanks much to the original taper and the remainder will be posted tomorrow.
