sarah harmer is one of those artists that i have no idea how i got into. if i didnt know any better i would say that it was song silver road which also featured gordon downie, but i know i was into her way before that pairing. there was a time when i would walk into a record store on a tuesday and just pick up any new release that looked interesting. that very well may be the case here. man, i miss those days.
regardless, sarah has a lovely new record out called oh little fire which was released last month, i believe, on zoe records. one thing i truly appreciate about ms harmer and her music, is that none of her records sound the same. sure, its the same lovely voice, but musically they vary from folky/pop, bluegrass, and with her latest more of a rocking vibe, or at least as “rocking” as a sarah harmer can be. her lovely voice, great lyrics are all still intact, just the music has changed. i like it quite a bit, although i may prefer her bluegrass stuff more, surprisingly, which can be heard on i’m a mountain. either way, you cannot go wrong with any harmer release.
Tags: gordon downie, oh little fire, sarah harmer, zoe recordsi rarely question, or second guess stuff i post, but when it comes to certain artists, who are controlled by majors, it makes me rethink my position. sometimes though, i just really dont care. the worst thing thats gonna happen is that they tell me to take it down. big whup!
with that all said, my main man, gord downie of the tragically hip is back with a new record entitled the grand bounce. its not a gordon downie record, but a gord downie & the country of miracles record, fyi. at this point, the man and his music should need no introduction and/or explanation. just accept that he’s one of the best songwriters of our time, assume the record is gonna follow suit, and in this case all of this is true.
not sure if its on sale in the states yet, as amazon is selling as an import. its prob avail through itunes, im assuming. he’s also touring, but of course nowhere near any of us in the states, of course unless you live near the canadian border.
looking at the list of artists, and committed artists, this is very tempting and ten bucks for a year is pretty much a steal. to top it all off, gord downie and the sadies are the featured artist of the month offering up a cover of randy newman’s “louisiana, 1927.” here’s the info, taken straight from the press release, on the swim drink fish music club and a few tracks from club below that.
the swim drink fish music club is an online music and audio experience @ swim drink fish music developed by lake ontario waterkeeper in collaboration with other waterkeeper organizations across canada. bringing together artists, activists, and citizens who care about clean water, the swim drink fish music club invites people to become members and celebrate the cub’s exclusive and rare music while at the same time contributing to the fight for swimmable, drinkable, fishable water in their community.
