hey baton rouge, come on down to mud and water tonight at 8 to see one of my favorite peeps, austin lucas. if you’ve never seen him, or heard of him, etc now you have no reason to check him out. he’s got a new record coming out sometime this summer, hopefully. if you are in baton rouge and do make it out, im the dude in the old school white sox hat.

sadly, i have been sitting on these new some dark holler tracks for a few weeks now, but as i have said before i have been so freakin pre-occupied with everything life is throwing at me. anyway, these two tracks are from their yet untitled this is american music release which is due out sometime this summer. was a huge fan of their ep, and cannot wait for this cause these two songs are fucking great.

you wanna get people’s collective mouths salivating for more? umm, make an ep as strong as athen’s the district attorney’s waiting on the calm down, give it away for free, then announce you got a full length coming out on 4.24. said record entitled, slowburner, is coming out on captains dead’s bff’s label, this is american music. oh, and theyre also playing the this is american music/captains dead sxsw tuesday kickoff party at hole in the wall.

i go through phases in which i envision what my record, if i ever made one, would sound like. my main goal would be to create an acoustic version of it takes a nation of millions to hold us back, but that would require a lot of work, none of which i am prepared to tackle. but, damn, i have been wanting to do something like that for years. when i say years, im talking like at least ten. maybe this decade?

there are a lot of bands that break, that shouldnt. i could rattle off at least 100+ just within the past 2 years, that were not worthy of your attention, no matter small it may be. then again, i can rattle off even more bands that are worthy of your attention, and thats the whole point of this little site. granted, music is all personal/subjective but ive been around long enough to see right through most of what is purely hype, and what is genuine. call it a gift, or call me a dick. whatever.

totally should have mentioned this weeks ago, but better late than never, i suppose? either way, today and maybe tomorrow you can grab wisconsin’s favorite sons juniper tars’ the howl street ep and to the trees for free. well, ya gotta give em your email address, but shit who doesnt already have it? i know at least a few nigerians who probably do. sadly, i have never really talked about these guys, but i really really dig em and are one of a few bands that i foresee great things a coming. dont just take my word for it, check out their press page and you’ll see a bunch of friends of captains dead sayin the same damn thing. so go ahead, click right here and enjoy.

Will Sheff and company have just released a free ep, Golden Opportunities 2. The record is a collection of covers available via the Okkervil River site in either .mp3 or .m4a formats. Havent spent a whole lot of time with the ep, or to be honest, the last album I Am Very Far. However, I consider this announcement of free music a nice reminder to dive back into their stuff.

howdy, hope everyone had a lovely weekend. mine was just swell thanks. firstly, thanks to ryan @ muzzle of bees for bringing these fellas to my attention. these guys being sat. nite duets and their record/ep one night only. if you know anything about me, you know i have a penchant for 90′s era jangly yet mildly sloppy pop, and boy do sat. nite duets fill that void. if you are a fan of pavement, silver jews, east river pipe, sentridoh, etc you should totally dig this. you can pick it up for free via their tumblr acct, but tumblr has been down for like a day now. so, i am going to be so bold and post the entire thing myself.

when kelly, joey and the gang were in town for the hotsauce and living room tour, there was some mention of a kelly ep coming out sometime, but i didnt imagine that it would be this soon. im half way through the 7 song ep, and as you can imagine its lovely, and free. a bit about the ep: apparently, she isnt the songwriting type, or so she says, so she got a bunch of current or ex-murfeesboro folks including joey kneiser, james jackson toth (wooden wand), kent eugene goolsby (the only sons), jason yeary (hammertorch), casey strength and keith pratt to donate a song for the ep. you can read more about the players, etc and download it here.

oh friday night how i have longed for you since about 6.15 am monday morning! ok now what, friday? oh, so you got nothing for me, huh? if you’re in new orleans there is a park the van showcase going on at tipitinas tonight featuring brass bed, native america and giant cloud.

in other news, got a hold of a copy of paper bird’s when the river took flight a few days ago, and thus far i am really diggin it. i am not really sure how to categorize their sound, there’s elements of bluegrass, rag time, and an all around feeling they reside in another place and time. which as it turns out, i am not alone in these feelings cause mr sean moeller seems to share the same sentiments. you can check out their daytrotter session here, which i didnt even know about til today. listening to said session makes em sound like they’re straight outta the the 30′s. everyone should just go a head and record everything at the daytrotter studios, cause everything always sounds incredible. here’s a couple tracks off when the river took flight.
