top of the monday evening! trying to get back into this blogging thing, but admittedly its been tough. then again, for the past year or so i have been going in spurts, which i guess is better than nothing esp after almost 8 years of doing this. anyway, so my boys centro-matic are in the studio recording a new record which has a working title of take pride in your long odds. seems mildly fitting for the band, who i think is one of, if not the best bands playing today. i celebrate and love their entire catalogue, and there is no reason you shouldnt too. this here show is from 8.24.07 at the mercury lounge in nashville opening up for jason isbell. who, btw, sits in with the centro-matic for the entire set. much love to the original taper….

you can purhase/download their stuff here via amazon

1. love you just the same
2. in such crooked times
3. fountains of fire
4. to unleash the horses now

captains dead's top 14 records of 2011

Posted by doubter on Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

well, here it is the unofficial captains dead top 14 of the year list. i say unofficial because as there are a few more contributors lurking about, they may have their own top whatever list, and i hope they share said list with the class. not much has changed since i did my premature list back a few months ago. at least in the top 5/6 department. i went through the site and re-listened to everything i had tagged as “best of 2011″ and after listening to these records, some changes definitely needed to be made. most notably the inclusion of wooden wand’s briarwood, southeast engine’s canary and chris bathgate’s salt year, all of which are phenomenal pieces of work. so with nothing left to say, here it is…

captains dead's premature top 10 of 2011

Posted by doubter on Monday, September 26th, 2011

as i laid on the couch last night, cause thats where i have been relegated to the past month or so, but thats another story – nothing bad, i was listening to a record that shall remain anonymous. even though its still 85+ degrees here in new orleans, its almost the october, and the end of the year. so i gots to thinkin, at this point what are my top ten records of the year? so i started rattling off records, in my head of course, and came to the conclusion that this year, 2011, has been the best year in music, at least shit i like, in a long time. coming up w/ a definitive top ten has been almost impossible, real world problems, but especially the top 5 or 6 cause i love them for very different reasons. every one of could be end up being my favorite of the year, or can i just have favorite 1a, 1b, 1c, etc? the one thing i struggled with was differentiating between what i have enjoyed the most, and what has made the biggest impact? they dont go hand in had, all the time, but this year it seems be the exception to the loose rule. strangely enough, there are two concept records in the top ten. roadside graves’ take on the s.e. hinton classic “the outsiders,” and richmond fontaine’s fucked up tale of lost souls all taking place in a logging town. surprise record of the year? has to go to the decemberists the king is dead, considering i wrote them off about 3 record ago, but i guess you bring peter buck in and it makes everything better. so as it stands, right now, here is my top ten of 2011, prematurely. btw, i highly recommend not “googling” premature unless you want to endure infinite sadness.

1. centro-maticonly in my double mind off candidate waltz

2. jason isbell and the 400 unitcodeine off here we rest

3. roadside graveslove me more off we can take care of ourselves

4. richmond fontainelost in the trees off the high country

5. mount moriahonly way out off self titled

6. glossarythe flood off long live all of us

7. william elliott whitmorebury your burdens in the ground off field songs

8. the decemberists – down by the water off the king is dead

9. austin lucas – darkness out of me off a new home in the old world

10. jill andrews the mirror off the mirror

Posted by doubter on Thursday, May 26th, 2011

hello! here be a new song/video from centro-matic’s forthcoming candidate waltz which is due out on 6.21 and can be pre-ordered here. at this point in the year, theres a very very tight race for my favorite record of the year, this is one of em, the other two, isbell’s here we rest and roadside graves’ we can take care of ourselves. first listen through though kinda threw me for a loop cause its kinda different than any other centro-matic record, at least to these ears. after a couple more listens though, the genius comes through.

centro-matic: an introduction, 24 track sampler

Posted by doubter on Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

i know ive talked about centro-matic quite a bit over the years, but there are some bands, centro-matic being one of them, that i want to expose more and more people to. i was planning on doing an introduction to em, like i have done previously with the pickin on series and richmond fontaine – there are more on the way btw. as luck would have it, i happened to be on twitter last night when whoever runs their twitter acct shared a 24 track sampler, which also includes south san gabriel work.

centro-matic came into my world one night at schubas many years ago. the year, i cant remember, and while not important, what is important is that they are still very heavily in my world. they were opening for anders parker and his band varnaline. i havent had too many of the experiences, but it was a love at first hearing type of one. i dont know what they opened up with, but as soon as will opened his mouth, i was hooked. as soon as they were done with their set, i went over to the merch table and picked up distance and clime. later that night i believe i caught will in the crowd and rambled something about their performances being one of the most inspired sets i had ever witnessed. they were there to prove something, like they had a texas size chip on their collective shoulders. years have passed and have been spreading the gospel of centro-matic to anyone who would listen. people often ask, “well what do they sound like?” my typical response is like a band you’ll still be listening to in 20 years. most of the time im met with either a blank stare, or something along those lines. to my credit, i have indeed have people come back to me and say thanks for turning them on to em. its all about small victories. enjoy….

buy centro-matic stuff via amazon or misra records

you can download this via yousendit but keep in mind its probably only avail for a week.

centro-matic + south san gabriel "eyas ep"

Posted by doubter on Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

got wind of this yesterday, via twitter, but have yet to purchase it. this ep takes 7 songs from the dual hawks sessions, that of course didnt make it to print, and im wondering if the cover of lionel richie’s “all night long” was ever considered for inclusion on dual hawks? that would have been slightly humorous. you can stream right down there or buy it via the centro-matic site – six bucks for the mp3 and 7 bucks for the wav files. the choice is yours.
