american aquarium "louisiana beauty queen" off live in raleigh

Posted by doubter on Monday, February 20th, 2012

admittedly, i was late the american aquarium party. ive said it before, and ill say it again, how the hell did this band put out 5 records before i finally heard of them and their record small town hymns – which ended up at #3 on my best of 2010 list. boggles the old noggin. i cant believe no one ever said “hey greg there’s this band you should check out cause they pretty much encompass everything you love about music, theyre called american aquarium.” nope never happened. another thing that annoys me is they tour relentlessly, i wont make up a number, but i know they are on the road more than 3/4 of any given year. i may be wrong with that, but not that far off, im sure.

american aquarium tonight in baton rouge at chelsea's cafe

Posted by doubter on Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

well, aint this a kick in the balls. im fairly confident that i told my wife to get the 15th of november off so i can attend this show. in fact, i know i told her to get it off. seeing as the one that now makes the schedules it should have been a no-brainer, but alas this is my space-case wife and i have come to live with it. still, just a little pissed, i must admit. so yeah, they’re playing there tonight, and also are running a kicstarter campaign to help record and distribute their upcoming record entitled, burn.flicker.die. i will definitely be donating, and you should definitely too, cause these guys are definitely worth your money and time. no doubt one of my favorite bands playing right now.

american aquarium live at old town tavern, 9.20.08

Posted by doubter on Thursday, August 4th, 2011

last year sometime, american aquarium and their record, small town hymns, somehow and mysteriously came into my field of vision. i thought they were a “new” band but dammit if i hadnt been missing out since like 05, which is when i think they formed. shit, i think i even missed em when they stormed through new orleans last year. either way, said record ended up at #3 on best of 2010 list and really up until about a month or so ago, thats all of theirs i had listened to. well, all that has changed cause i have dug into their catalogue and its all full of awesome.

i cannot recommend digging into their catalogue enough. buy something via amazon or via their general store.

today is the last day of cxcw, and its been a doozy. tons of artists have participated and all together me thinks it was a huge success. if you havent been checking the updates over at the site, you definitely need to. that song up there that bj of american aquarium was kind enough to do for cxcw is a new song entitled “redheads and adderall.”

captains dead's top 5 at the kinda midway point, 2010

Posted by doubter on Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

was thinking bout this today. so i figured i’d put my picks to paper, or internets as it were. there’s been a lot of great stuff, but not too much that has that amazed me. now the question being, would i rather have 2 or 3 amazing records, and the rest so-so, or 10 great records, but maybe no amazing records? i think i would take the latter, but thats just my feeling right now.

the futurebirds record keeps getting better and better with each listen, and i am more than super pissed that i missed em last week. if you cant find something to like or love about it, we probably wouldnt be friends. american aquarium’s small town hymns falls into the same category. first listen i thought it was nice enough, but now that im a few months into it, man its a great piece of no bullshit rock n roll. same with gaslight anthem’s american slang, which i keep hearing isnt as good as their first two, but man it scratches me right where i itch. i dont care if it may sound half-baked, or samey, cause its an awesome summer record, or maybe the soundtrack to kickin some ass, and takin some names, and best played full blast. glossary’s feral fire, well they’re just a perfect model of consistency. i hate to use the term, but “all killer, no filler” on feral fire. the real surprise though is palomino. as i stated a couple of days ago, i have dug their previous output, but this record has really hit home. my co-worker today stated that if he had to listen to it for more than an hour, he’d go crazy. its manic, for sure, but there’s a calm if you listen close enough.

1. futurebirdshamptons lullaby – out next week on autumn tone
johnny utah

2. american aquariumsmall town hymns
rattlesnake

3. trampled by turtlespalomino
new orleans

4. gaslight anthemamerican slang
