me thinks i could make a strong argument that swervedriver were one of most important bands to come out of the 90′s. actually they never made it out of the 90′s cause 99th dream was their last record which was released in 1998. thats all semantics though, cause the point is during their time together they made what i would consider 4 classic records, and yeah im even including the much underrated 99th dream. they often get clumped in with the likes of my bloody valentine and the whole shoegazer crowd, which is really unfair cause swervedriver records were/are actually listenable. sure in mbv’s case loveless is considered by most to be an essential listening experience, and i wouldnt deny that, but god damn if mezcal head or ejector seat reservation dont deserve the same tag. actually, after all of that i would probably be too tired and drunk to argue and just give into pavement being the most important band to come out of said time period.
well…. the man behind all that awesomeness, adam franklin, has a newer record out with his band bolts of melody which is called i could sleep for a thousand years. maybe its just my ears, but its the closest thing post swervedriver that comes as close as replicating aka being as awesome as his swervedriver days.
yesterday has gone forever
last train to satansville off mezcal head
buy i could sleep a thousand years via amazon and while youre there, pick up any swervedriver record.

seize the day from bolts of melody
great lake swimmers are tomorrow, saturday, @ 9ish. site / myspace
your rocky spine from ongiara
song for the angels from bodies and minds
i gotta hand it to stereogum. if you haven’t heard, he/they have put together a pretty damn impressive list of artists covering songs from rem’s classic automatic for the people in honor of its 15th anniversary. rogue wave covering “sidewinder sleeps tonite,” meat puppets doin “everybody hurts,” catfish haven and “monty got a raw deal,” the wrens takin on “nightswimming,” just to name a few. also, matthew from fluxblog adds a pretty cool essay about automatic that is defiitely worth reading. for more info clicky here
its pretty damn rare when a press release likens the band they are pushing to a bunch of bands i have never bothered listening to. such is the case with detroit’s child bite. the release goes on about how they recall the likes of brianiac – heard of but never listened to, early deerhoof – listened to like three tracks, and pere ubu – the name always turned me off. so, i figured i’d bite. its always good diversify ones palette. like i said i dont know about any of the above, but they bring to mind cap n’ jazz crossed with early modest mouse. which on paper sounds like a great thing, two of my faves battling it out for ultimate supremacy, and in child bites hands its not awesome but cool enough. i can foresee a relationship blooming in the near future…
their new record, gold thriller, is out now me thinks on joyful noise
dont do what your body tells you to do
i am very psyched to see that tim midgett and andy cohen’s bottomless pit record, hammer of the gods, has finally seen the light of day. on board with tim and andy is chris manfran from the late, great, seam, and brian orchard of .22. if you were unaware, tim and andy made up 2/3 of the iconic, at least in my book, chicago band, silkworm.
one thing i really dig about denton, texas’ midlake, and this is going to be a contradiction, is that they sound like a lot of bands but sound like nobody else. you can pinpoint their influences to the lazy fm radio days of the mid to late 70′s but also have their feet firmly planted in the here and now. midlake is an interesting dichotomy.
here they are playing at the crocodile cafe in seattle on 9.27.07. much thanks to oasisdouglas for making this possible. he is not a dick.
Tags: adam franklin, bottomless pit, child bite, great lake swimmers, in store, midlake, stereogumits only about 5 minutes in and i already had to turn off the irish and michigan game. my irish not lookin so good. in fact, downright embarrassing. then to add insult to injury i turn on the red sox/yankees game and jeter knocks one out off josh beckett. i hate, nay, loathe derek jeter.
for those in the atlanta area, mark your google calendars for 10.5 for my man adam franklin, formerly of swervedriver, is coming to town for a show at the earl and an instore at criminal earlier in the evening. his new record, bolts of melody, is quite grand.
he’s got a shitload of other dates coming up. so, check his site or myspace for dates.
if you were to write out a top 20 list of your favorite bands and if this list includes the likes of echo and the bunnymen, joy division, roxy music, and maybe the cure then the men of boston’s junius just may be your thang. their new self titled record is out on 10.9.
in 1990 mother love bone’s apple was like manna from heaven to these 16 year old ears. the strange thing about recalling memories is that its easy to describe what you were feeling but more difficult to explain why you were feeling it. such is the case with apple. i remember being absolutely enamored by it, but dont really remember why. so, to get to the bottom of this, i pulled it out the other day and tried to recall, only this time with 33 year old ears. to say the experiment was a failure would do apple a grave injustice, but for the life of me i really cant pinpoint what i loved about it so. it’s still a great record, even if it time has not been overly kind to it, but you just have to put the time and place it was recorded all into perspective.
here they are performing in seattle on 1.3.90 @ the vogue

at this point i hate the iphone much like jerry, elaine, kramer and george hated the drake.
well, looky what we have here. i was pretty pscyed to find after waking up from nine hour slumber that a promotion company was kind enough to send me info on the upcoming adam franklin, ex-swervedriver, record. one thing i found interesting is that this is apparently his seventh non-swervedriver release? six of those being toshack highway releases. where the fuck have i been? i thought there were only like a couple. anyway, you can stream bolts of melody here. i have yet to give a whirl but the two tracks provided to me sound pretty damn good.
bolts of melody is set to be released on 6.26
in another bit of adam franklin news. he and interpol drummer sam fogarino teamed up as setting suns recently and they got some tracks on their myspace page.
just when i thought laura veirs was going to be leading lady for the 07 here comes the ukraine born alina simone to shake things up a bit. she’s not as coy/frail as ms marshall and not as overly dramatic as ms harvey but she stradles both lines quite nicely. i have only listened to her yet to be released record, placenessness, once but it left a huge impression on me – which is rare with first listens. check her out, i know you want be disappointed.
placenessness is set to be released on 8.14

during my recent travels throughout the interweb i came across a very cool, new collection of live swervedriver b sides and other oddities. in case you didnt know the swervedriver site also features live versions of each of their 4 records – which i still cannot recommend enough. here’s a brief sampling of some of their stuff. dont like to be spoonfed? then click here. btw, adam is releasing a new record, bolts of melody, on 8.26 in north america and 6.29 in australia. more information can be found right here.
