could she be any more captivating? i dont think so.

the other morning @ about 5 am i awoke to what i thought was an angel singing to me. its kinda crazy what you will think when you wake up abruptly from a slumber – even if it happens to be at work. the song that i woke to was joanna’s stunning “clam, crab, cockle, cowrie.” since then i have found a greater appreciation for her work and started listening in a little deeper than i had previously.

here she is performing @ bottletree in b’ham, alabama on 11.25.06. its a beautiful recording only marred by a couple glitches here and there.

1. bridges and balloons

2. the book of right on

3. traditional scottish song

4. emily

5. monkey and bear

6. sawdust and diamonds

7. only skin

8. cosmia

9. sadie

10. peach, plum, pear

clam, crab, cockle, cowrie from joanna newsom and the y’s street band ep

dont forget to waste 3 seconds and vote for the teenage prayers as the deli’s best nyc band for the month. please click here

here’s another track from their recently recorded everyone thinks you’re great

dreams of the south

**edit thanks to everyone, all 60 of you, who have taken the time to vote for the teenage prayers but dear lord people! there have been more than 1700 of you who have been through here in the past 24 hours and all we can come up with is 60? kinda disappointing people.  we can do better than that.  i just know we can.  thanks in advance, again.

Joanna Newsom’s definitely an acquired taste which I haven’t gotten yet. I think she’s got a good voice, but I think her music is maybe a little too light for me. Or maybe I haven’t been in the right mood yet. Ah well, I will take a listen.

    Thanks!

And, I popped in to vote for your friends! They were in the lead when I did, so you must be doing something right.

  2. gregor says:

thanks for the vote steve. yeah, joanna is definitely an acquired taste, but her y’s record is much more accessible, i think. meaning, she doesnt sound like lisa simpson so much.

  3. jeff says:

I agree completely that Ys is more accessible, but I think after hearing Ys, her other albums become more accessible, too. Or maybe tolerable is the right word. You have to be predisposed to that style, I think, for the real beauty of her music to hit you. Sadie is a really great song, for instance, but after hearing Ys, it’s not just a song about a dog anymore, it’s the beginnings of Monkey and Bear, the roots of Emily. So Ys is an amazing album in that it not only adds nicely to, but also magnifies and enhances the rest of her discography.

Where did you get this recording? And do you have any others? I just stumbled on your site looking for some live Joanna, and this recording is practically pristine for a live show. Any idea where to look? Looks like I may be too late to vote for your band there :(

  5. dave says:

I feel the same listening to her music. Poetry.
A friend of mine told me she was Bjork’s harpist ? Is that true ?

  6. gregor says:

i have never heard that she was bjork’s harpist, but i a tend to not know a lot of stuff.

  7. aaron says:

this is a wonderful set, thanks for posting! :]

  8. Tivien says:

I’m so glad to learn this concert is still available. Thank you very much! It’s a wonderful set, some songs sound even better than the original versions. Pure pleasure :)

  9. luke says:

the links are dead. Any way that I can still get this recording? I found peach, plum, pear from this set (i think) and it is by far the best recording of the song I have heard. All the other live tracks that I have been able to find are pretty much garbage (mostly due to recording issues).

If anyone has this, I would be willing to trade a recorded copy of a concert that NPR was broadcasting from 2010
