hey, howdy, hi! t-minus 17 days until family vacation fun time! we are packing up the family subaru and heading up to somewhere near knoxville, tn. not necessarily my idea of the most awesome vacation spot, but it wasnt my call. we are meeting up with all of the bride’s family at a 30 acre private estate for the week – here it is if you care. if you recall, you probably dont though, we did this two summers ago, but met up in cambridge, maryland. im really not into hiking, especially in places where they have shit that can eat you, and the local fishing hole is like 30 miles away, bummer. it does have interents, which is great to hear. for some reason the place we had in maryland, did not. which sucked all kinds of ass….

found this sound board portastatic show, from 8.9.94 at the duke coffee house in durham, buried deep in a folder which i lovingly named “stf.” i think “stf” may mean “stuff to file” which of course i never got around to.

magnet recently talked with mac regarding the state of merge, the music biz, superchunk, portastatic, and more! check it out here.

ps how’s the quitting smoking coming along?

  4. greg says:

i have been to knoxville, and it seemed ok. what makes it so awesome? anything i should see? yeah laurie, i wish there were too. i used to have a few, but they are nowhere to be found. oh yes, that smoking thing. not so well. thanks for asking though…

  5. Laurie says:

D’oh! I certainly didn’t mean to shame you or whatever regarding the smoking cessation-I think I said this before–when it happens, it happens. Here in Boston, cigarettes are priced as if they have been dipped in gold…almost $10/pack–yikes!

    • gregor says:

no worries and no shame, just a little disappointment. these things are a son of a bitch. non-smokers tell me all the time to “just quit.” i then politely ask if they have ever smoked and 9.9 times out of 10, i get no. i then try to explain how difficult it is and of course they dont want to hear that, they just want to make me feel like shit for what a weak person i must apparently be. usually this kind of treatment comes from people who have the own demons they wrestle with…. lovely..

  6. Laurie says:

You’ll quit when you do. I know how dumb that looks in print, but there will be a day when you wake up and not have one with coffee and then it kind of snowballs from there. But don’t get all down on yourself because it’s a hard habit to break (omg–isn’t that the name of a freaking Chicago song?) With that, I will shut up already. L

  7. Harold B. says:

I was there, but haven’t thought about this show in years. One of the few with my favorite tune, “A Bear That Chokes”. I’d be happy to share crappy copies of the Merge 5 and 10 shows (I’d have to dig them out), if don’t have them. But this one is better than those two.

marvellous stuff, early portastatic stuff never gets the credit it deserves, a bear that chokes is one of my fave portastatic songs ever :) he’s never bloomin’ come to the uk though…
