justin rutledge “courage (hugh maclennan)” – tragically hip cover

Posted by gregor on Thursday, January 30th, 2014

Daredevil Digi 9

i dont know who justin rutledge is, other than good friend matt saying “he rules” or something along those lines. well, mr rutledge is putting out a record, his 6th, made up entirely of tragically hip covers. the record is entitled daredevil, btw. keep in mind the hip are one of my most cherished bands, and if someone is putting out a complete record of covers of said band, my eyebrow(s) are gonna raise. in my tiny brain, i think how dare someone cover the hip, but on the flipside it excites me. after reading this article, i have zero doubts that justin’s heart is in the right place, but admittedly i am a bit scared. in my case, i have come to love these songs, and have been listening to them for years and years, and then you hear another take, its kind of a bit of a shock. i think anyone who has a favorite artist, and finds covers of their favorite songs would probably feel the same way? i really look forward to hearing this whole thing. daredevil is out on 4.22.

edit: as i was typing in the “tags” justins name came up, which means i must have written about him before and well what the fuck? i did back in 2008… it really wasnt a write up but just a mention. i cant be expected to remember 5 years ago….

golden smog live at great american music hall, 6.26.96

Posted by gregor on Sunday, January 26th, 2014

whats up suckers? not much on my end, just a lazy sunday, which i am absolutely fine with. as some of you may know i dont pay much attention to other music blogs. its not that i dont care what other people are talking about, well i sort of dont, but i just really have zero interest in but its like making pizza’s all day and then spend another few hours watching someone else make pizzas. if that makes any sense? what i am getting at, just learned this week that one of the longest running bloggers, frank over at chromewaves cut the chord back in mid december, then bryan from ninebullets handed over the reigns to good pal of mine and long time contributor romeosidvicious and april from now this sound is brave handed over her site to a young lady named jennifer. all long running blogs, 11 years, 8ish, and 4ish respectively. the whole music blogging landscape has changed, some for the better, but a lot for the worse. i am not going anywhere, cause i would love to hit 12 years. at this point i am at 8.5 years, another 3.5 is probably doable. i hope. anyway, here are the mighty men of golden smog, just like the title suggests.

the whole thing

1. walk where he walked
2. ill fated
3. glad and sorry
4. yesterday cried
5. easy to be hard
6. v
7. revolution blues
8. love and mercy
9. wont be coming home
10. pecan pie
11. he’s a dick (57)

superdrag live at the casbah, 7.7.2000

Posted by gregor on Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

superdragre535c

in the realm of the pop and power and punky genre, me thinks it dont get much higher than the men from knoxville, tn, superdrag. i celebrate their entire catalogue with much frequency, although i find myself just listening to last call for vitriol for whatever reason, but everyone i run into, who are superdrag fans, prefer their 1996 release, regretfully yours. for the record, the casbah is in johnson city, tn.

amazon has some good deals on their records, or if youre using the spotify, theres a couple records on there that are definitely worth your time.

1. intro > keep it close to me
2. gimme animosity
3. carried
4. hellbent (43)

the jayhawks’ poised for stardom – bootleg

Posted by gregor on Tuesday, January 21st, 2014

jayhawks-american-recordings640x310

sup, folks! you may be nothing like me, but im big on streaming services. sure i still like my cds/records, but most of my waking life i am tied to a pc or my phone, and thus i am always for the ultimate streaming service. i love rdio, but i fear for their future, and thus dont want to invest much more time into them. i like spotify’s deep selection, but their music management is just horrible – not everything is a fucking playlist. i currently use google music, which i have to admit is pretty awesome and have no complaints other than their catalogue isnt as deep as spotify, but you can upload your own music to fill in the gaps. well, today, beats music launched and thus far i am very impressed. i was very skeptical at first, judging by some of the ui screenshots i had seen. either way, this may, hit the sweet spot tween all of above mentioned streaming services. they have a 7 day trial, and if youre interested here is the link. let it be known, i dont by into the whole beats headphones phenomenon cause its purely marketing, but this service is pretty spot on.

anyway, here are the jayhawks playing in new york in 95, tracks 1-7 and in chicago in 93, 8-16. the latter being part of taste of chicago, which i attended. i could be wrong though.

the entire thing in zip

dean wareham “holding pattern”

Posted by gregor on Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

dean

oh happy day, peoples. i love me some dean wareham, whatever he’s doing, and right now this song is completely ruling my world at this moment. if there is a thing as “classic wareham” this be it. the record is entitled holding pattern is his solo debut. this surprises me cause at this point in his career one would think he would have released something solo, but what do i know? the record was produced by jim james and is due out on 3.11.
