joel plaskett “jimmie’s still jimmie”

by gregor on May 6, 2011

not too sure how i came across joel plaskett’s most excellent 07 release ashtray rock, but im guessing the recommendation came from some filthy canadian cause thats where he hails from. anyway, said release is an awesome pop/rock record filled with huge hooks, high energy, great lyrics and all the while being a concept record. you can read about the story line here via wikipedia. anywho, mr plaskett has teamed up with shotgun jimmie – who i have never heard of, for a split 7″ that was just recently released via new scotland records.

if youve never heard ashtray rock, i cannot recommend it enough. buy it via amazon. and here’s plaskett’s half of the 7″.

jimmies still jimmie

He’s fantastic live too. Not sure if he tours the states very often, but if he is in your area, make sure to catch him.

Shotgun Jimmie is from just a few hours north of here (halifax, NS) a really great art and music mecca called Sackville, New Brunswick home of the Sappy Records Music FEstival. He was in a band called Shotgun & Jaybird, with whom Julie Doiron played for a few years, and they released a shitload of music. Much of which you can;t find now but they wee giving away for free on the website – if it is still up, wprth checking out. The other part of S&J was “shotgun” aka Fred Squire. fred later made the fantastic folk album called Daniel Fred & Julie with Julie Doiron and Daniel Romano. Fred and Julie also had a band called “calm down it’s monday”….Knowing yr tastes, i think you would love the D,F&J album and also Daniel Romano and Fred’s solo work….realyl great great music.

as for Joel….well, he is in a songwriting and performing class to himself. such a great humble person who really cares for his community.

thanks for giving him props
