here i come, elizabeth!

wow! the fantastic four movie is pretty bad, i dont know if the delictable jessica alba can save this train wreck. with that said, the new fantastic four, rise of the silver surfer, looks pretty bad ass – at least that’s what i can gather from the preview.
what can i say about husker du that hasnt already been stated probably more elequantly before? i dont listen to ‘em nearly enough as i should, but for some reason i can only handle them in small but intense doses. i think the quality of most of the recordings makes them almost unlistenable now. i understand that was part of the husker du experience, but my aging ears find it hard to dig in like i use to.
here they are playing in london on june 21 of 1987 – its supposedly a soundboard recording.

I am approaching 42 and nothing takes me back to my youth like listening to Husker Du. Unfortunately I lived in a part of the country that didn’t see many bands come to town, and back then I didn’t have an easy way to find tour dates so I never saw them perform live. I’ve seen Bob Mould (solo and in many band configurations) a number of times and Grant Hart (solo) once, but never the band.
Thanks! I am going to enjoy listening to these.
unfortunately i never got to see husker du live before they disbanded. i was just a little too young at the time to go and see them. i have seen bob about 15 times, he was in chicago – my hometown – what seemed to be every other day for a few years, which was definitely not a bad thing. thanks for stopping by.
Thanks for posting the tracks, and yes, you’re correct to say, in hind-sight their proper recordings leave a lot to be desired. I think the Husker experience though had a lot more to do with the songs themselves and due to their strength , things like better production values weren’t as closely scrutinized back in those days, though there’s no shortage of recordings by peer bands of the time that beg the debate in spades… Part of the problem was the band being used to doing things themselves and largely protective and distrustful of others preventing them from looking elsewhere for an objectively experienced set of ears. The other part of it chalked up to band paradigm itself, wherein Mould & Co. simply felt that nobody else was going to know what they were about better then themselves which is all well and good–partially righteous too–but no leas flawed (and ego-fueled) logic at best. Or at least this is my perspective having lived within the rank and file of the Twin Cities scene in those days.
By the way, where did you get the live photo? That was obviously shot at the original 7th Street Entry, back when the stage was situated where the bar now exists. Memories…
Ive heard the Mould really wants to remaster all the old songs and re-release them but its all tied up in legal entanglements. What a shame.
Wow. These live recordings are nearly on a sonic par with the studio recordings. A great set. Thanks!
This makes me feel very old! ;-)But it still sounds amazing. I used to have a cassette recording of this gig, but this sounds much better than I remember it.
I was fortunate enough to see them twice – once in March 86 and once the night before this in Manchester – which is still one of the best gigs I have ever attended. I had to sacrifice my Iggy Pop ticket and travel half the country, but I definitely made the right decision.
The studio albums definitely need remastering – or some kind of major production work doing on them – as they don’t do justice to the band’s live sound at all. Live, they were devastating.
Now if someone were to reissue the Makes No Sense video on dvd…
Husker Du!
I blew out the tweeters on my stereo blasting “These Important Years” many eons ago! Ah, sweet sweet memories…
I’ve had a love-hate relationship with their music. I absolutely LOVED most of the Bob Mould written songs, but HATED most of the Grant Hart written songs. I could tell within a few seconds into each song who wrote it and I’d just skip the Grant Hart ones…
Thanks for the post!
man, i wish i would have had the chance to see em. all of your descriptions make me very jealous. btw, peter i just google’d husker du and a few pages in was this photo. i tried to give proper credit but couldnt come up with a photographer.
Best band that ever… oh fuck it. Best band ever.
I saw them on the New day tour in Columbus, Ohio with Soul Asylum in 85.
Great post!!
