did you just call me coltrane?

Posted by doubter on Thursday, July 26th, 2007

you can listen to the first single off rilo kiley’s upcoming release under the black light over at stereogum. cant say that i am particularly thrilled by it but heres hoping its a grower.

on paper the phantom family halo sounds like they should be awesome considering their lineage, members of slint – yay! – the for carnation – awesome – and dead child – who? although this is a bit misleading cause michael mcmahan, who was(is) in the for carnation toured with slint during their recent reunion tour. so, he wasnt part of the original lineup. still i guess thats cool cause the for carnation are great. so, with all this in mind i expected at least mid level great things from the phantom family halo. maybe its just my mood but the two tracks i listened to did absolutely nothing for me. again, it could be my mood cause i feel like i should really dig em.

on the other end of the musical diggin spectrum is the mabuses. i havent read anything about em cause there isnt anything available in the way of information. what i do know is that they gots a new record, mabused, out now and if you dig any of the bands that make up the e6 collective then you should, in your right mind, dig the mabuses.

i love van the man but his outfit on the last waltz is just terrible. and those little ‘kicks’ he does are laughable. levon i think laughs at him

  3. gregor says:

yeah, i would have to agree but then again he is playing with the band. so, i have to give him some lee-way on the whole ordeal. if memory serves me correctly wasnt neil diamond wearing some kind of pant suit?

  4. matt says:

yeah, neil was too. i don’t think it was as bad as van’s though. that is just downright nasty looking. it looks like he has a gymnastics outfit on underneath.

best performance in the last waltz:
    forever young.

  5. owl says:

But if I did, you wouldn’t be able to do anything about it, would you?

  6. Chris says:

love the show and love the royal tenenbaums quote.

Hey guys, great show for sure! I believe you are missing a few of the tracks (Ballerina, Hound Dog, Tupelo Honey, and Wild Night?). Also, I found a remastered copy of this very show and the first half is available for download, the second half will be uploaded on Sunday. Here is the link if any of you are interested, I think you will all be impressed with the sound of the remastered copy.

  8. Dan says:

First, thanks. Second, Greg, are you sure this is the same show? The track listing is in a different sequence.

  9. Nigel says:

Dan, this is the same show, but complete and in the correct order. Like a lot of bootlegs, the show has been edited to fit on one disc. As far as order, I did some research. There are a lot of bootlegs of this show, and it seems bootleggers rearrange the tracks and change the date (I’ve seen this show listed as September 5th, 7th, and 9th) So collectors will buy several copies. So big thanks to the Captain for turning me on to the existence of this show and thanks to Greg for the link to the rematered and complete version. And if you haven’t downloaded it, do. Great recording, great performance.

Phantom Family Halo were just at my house!
I offered for them to crash here if they needed
it since I saw they were in town a few days.
and I have the whole house to myself for a month so…

But yeah, I agree with you about their music.
It’s not really good. hmm. It’s a little better live,
but yeah. I’m seeing them tonight at that house show.
I know those guys who put shows on there. They
get great bands like Castanets, Jana Hunter, Old
    Time Relijun, Pall Jenkins….

  11. Sasha says:

UPDATE: uh, I saw Phantom Family Halo
again at the house show. It was awesome.
So much better than when they opened for
Slint.. their cd just doesn’t sound like the live
performance which is sad. Pretty good live!

I saw the phantom family halo @ casbah on the 12th with acid mothers guru guru,,,they melted my fucking brain,,,drummer is amazing,,,different from the recordin gs but I think it’s two different spectrums to enjoy about them….

Greg, I love you! Thank you! I have been searching frantically tonight for a download of You’re My Woman. I am getting married in September and our first dance will either be Tupelo Honey or You’re My Woman. For many years, I have wanted Crazy Love as my wedding song, as it was my first introduction to the fabulous Van Morrison. Then, I found Tupelo Honey, among many others, and fell more in love. Tonight, I saw the lyrics to You’re My Woman, and had to hear it. I will be buying the cd tomorrow, but was dying to hear the whole song tonight, so Thank You!!!!

  14. gregor says:

oh, you are very welcome kristen! glad i could help in some small way, and good luck with the wedding and stuff. be well.

  15. Kate says:

Awesome post – grew up listening to Van the Man, my dad’s influence. Couldn’t stand him when I was a kid. Love him now! Thanks for the tunes.

  16. Joe Stin says:

Sorry, I can’t see the video, as it’s been deleted. I’m not sure what the Coltrane reference implies; I assume it is for “The Giant.” Really, I love VM, but to compare this to Coltrane (is this, indeed, was what was said or intended) is ludicrous. Two totally different factions of music. I mean, really, the closest CM came to Jazz was “Moondance” which was a weak West Coast song (quite catchy, tho’). The stuff ‘Trane was doing was light years ahead of this.
