cold water flat’s “magnetic north pole”

gregor | August 27th, 2010 - 1:21 pm

back in 1995, paul janovitz, brother to buffalo tom’s bill, and his band cold water flat released their self titled record – i dont think it was a debut, although maybe full-length debut. regardless, said release was pretty awesome, couple that with the fact that he was bill’s brother, i had to assume the apple didnt fall far. the record was filled with some much promise that i was more that overly excited about their future. it also didnt hurt that i was a huge fan of stuff coming out of tim o’heir’s fort apache studios, which this record was a product. i figured by 96 or 97, they would have put something new out, but twas not meant to be, and thus i am still waiting. paul did go on to form drag strip courage, who i have never heard, sadly.

you can pick up cold water flat’s record on amazon
for like a penny or something ridiculous like that. here’s the song that ruled much of my 1995.

free record alert: the choosy beggars

gregor | August 24th, 2010 - 7:27 pm

firstly, i gotta thank mr duquette johnston for tipping me off to these guys. well, he didnt directly say “hey greg check these guys out”, it was a general tweet. secondly, about 15 seconds into the first song, “good times, they disappear,” off the choosy beggars’ self titled record, i knew i was in love. sadly, i cant find any good information on these guys other than the fact that they tagged “seattle” on their bandcamp site. so, i can only assume they reside from said city. the other tag on their badcamp site is “classic rock.” there are definitely hints of that genre, but also early motown plays just of an integral part of the “vibe” of the record. the remind me of catfish haven doing the black crowes doing smokey robinson – that may be a horrible comparison, for what its worth. regardless, the record is definitely one of the best i have heard this year. probably only number two or three too strand of oaks’ pope killdragon or futurebirds’ hamptons lullaby.

silver jews’ “tanglewood numbers” demos

gregor | August 23rd, 2010 - 5:15 pm

it would seem to me that david berman’s silver jews are a band that most people love, or cant stand. i personally love em, but even saying that, i can only handle so much, sometimes. i dont think i could ever go on an entire silver jews catalogue run, like i can do with a lot of bands. then again, i have never tried. so, i may very well be talking out of my ass. me thinks tanglewood numbers is their/his best work, but the more i think about it, and replaying other silver joos records, all of em are pretty damn great. bright flight is the only one i could probably live without. heres to hoping david records again, someday.

amazon has all their records in mp3 format priced at 8.99, for what its worth.

punks in the beerlight
sometimes a pony gets depressed
k-hole

im getting back into getting back into you
how can i love you if you wont lie down

tricky’s “hell is around the corner”

gregor | August 16th, 2010 - 9:32 pm

hell is around the corner off maxinquaye

for the record, me thinks everyone should hear this record at least once. its a sexy, hypnotic, sometimes brutal, but always brilliant piece of work. this was definitely left off my top fifty of all time. the production alone is worth listening to, let alone everything else going on.
