golden smog live at great american music hall, 6.26.96

Posted by gregor on Sunday, January 26th, 2014

whats up suckers? not much on my end, just a lazy sunday, which i am absolutely fine with. as some of you may know i dont pay much attention to other music blogs. its not that i dont care what other people are talking about, well i sort of dont, but i just really have zero interest in but its like making pizza’s all day and then spend another few hours watching someone else make pizzas. if that makes any sense? what i am getting at, just learned this week that one of the longest running bloggers, frank over at chromewaves cut the chord back in mid december, then bryan from ninebullets handed over the reigns to good pal of mine and long time contributor romeosidvicious and april from now this sound is brave handed over her site to a young lady named jennifer. all long running blogs, 11 years, 8ish, and 4ish respectively. the whole music blogging landscape has changed, some for the better, but a lot for the worse. i am not going anywhere, cause i would love to hit 12 years. at this point i am at 8.5 years, another 3.5 is probably doable. i hope. anyway, here are the mighty men of golden smog, just like the title suggests.

the whole thing

explosions in the sky live in nottingham, england, 2.9.04

Posted by gregor on Saturday, December 7th, 2013

eits

morning, americans, and the rest of the world, good day. its amazing the pure raw emotion that an explosions song can bring out in me. there probably is no other band on this planet that can elicit such feelings, and they do it with no lyrics, which is even more amazing, at least to me. they conjure up memories, some great, others you may want to have forgotten. emotional rollercoaster….

buy an explosions in the sky record via amazon it will do your soul good…

1. intro
2. first breath after a coma
3. greet death (363)

modest mouse live at the crystal ballroom, 9.8.2001

Posted by gregor on Wednesday, November 20th, 2013

modest

well, here’s to hoping we get a new modest mouse record, soon. admittedly, i absolutely hated we were dead…. well, not hated, but didnt care for it much at all, save a few songs. other than that misstep, i love their entire catalogue, and really ruled and shaped my early 20′s to early 30′s. so for a good decade they were a huge part of my musical makeup. anyway, here is a lovely soundboard from portland’s crystal ballroom. if for whatever reason you never checked em out, i recommend starting with lonesome crowded west and the moon and antarctica… buy em via amazon

1. intro
2. third planet
3. paper thin walls
4. what people are made of
5. a life artic sounds
6. tiny cities made of ashes
7. broke (704)

jeff buckley live at arlene’s grocery, 2.9.97

Posted by gregor on Sunday, November 17th, 2013

Jeff-buckley

today jeff would have been 47…. very interesting that a guy who really put out one record is still in the hearts of so many nearly 16 years after his death. speaks volumes to his talent, and i guess what could have been. this is not the best recording, but its lovely in warts and blemishes. rip jeff

1. nightmares by the sea
2. witches rave
3. so real
4. havent you
5. lover you shouldve come over (1067)

wilco – am demos

Posted by gregor on Friday, November 8th, 2013

am

happy friday peoples! firstly, i still havent sent out thank you’s and shit from the indiegogo campaign, but if you are reading this and you donated and want something from me, email me captainsdead at gmail dot com. secondly, been thinking about adding a bit more content to the site. granted its not awesome content, but trying to bring all my social shit centralized into one place. this may be a good idea or a bad idea? i have a tumblr acct, which my instagram and other random shit feeds into, but was thinking about incorporating all that into the site? thoughts? or should i just leave the site be as it is? i dont know if you care about seeing pictures of my kids, or me drinking beer or pictures of random crap i find on reddit, but maybe you do? so you tell me… anyway, here are some am demos…. keeping on the wilco kick from yesterday.

1. must be high
2. shouldnt be ashamed
3. box full of letters
4. pick up the change
5. passenger side (382)

wilco – summerteeth demos

Posted by gregor on Thursday, November 7th, 2013

oh, wilco/tweedy, i miss you so much. i get a lot of shit from die hard, yet blind, wilco fans for saying that nels cline ruined wilco, and i usually only say that cause i know it pisses people off, or at least annoys them. kicking jay out of the band, ruined wilco. jeff needs a foil, not yes men, and jay was just that. not discounting any of the other guys participation or input in later day wilco, but me really thinks that jay pushed jeff and was willing to call him out on his bs. none of us really know what went down then, whats going on now, etc… but still, i miss that wilco. change is inevitable, but did it have to be so shitty?

EDIT: SADLY WILCO MANAGEMENT/LAWYERS ASKED, VERY POLITELY, MIND YOU, THAT I TAKE THESE DOWN. SORRY FOLKS, PARKS CLOSED.

1. a shot in the arm
2. we’re just friends
3. im always in love
4. candyfloss
5. how to fight loneliness
6. tried and true

sometimes its hard to put into words what an artists body of work means to you. most of the times you read reviews and its purely methodical. there’s no heart, no past history, just what they’re hearing now. sometimes music is a puzzle, and it doesnt make sense, until you put it all together. thats […]
