Luke Winslow-King BW_Jason Kruppa

granted, i didnt live in new orleans for a super long time, 4 years, but it surprises me that i never heard of luke winslow-king during my residency. sure i cant keep up with everything, but still i wish i would have. well, as you can guess mr winslow-king lives in new orleans and he has a new record coming out entitled the coming tide which is out on 4.23 on bloodshot records. i am definitely digging his vibe which is absolutely reminds me of new orleans. i just picture me and the wife stumbling into some dark hole the wall at 3 am on frenchmen or pick a street and this song being played. as per usual havent heard the entire thing, but i hopefully will have it in my grubby little mitts, soon.

stay on the bike “left”

stay

i have been a huge fan of diy/bedroom recordings since the first time i heard lou barlow’s sentridoh sometime in 1994/95, i think. man i wish i still had that tape, the cover was hand done by lou and it was just awesome. sadly, my 1996 saturn, the car i had at the time, ate it at some point. getting back to home recording, its a totally different world out there now. i recorded almost an entire records worth of crap with garageband, and i have zero talent. matt grajcar, on the other hand has talent, and has been recording in his basement/bedroom for more than a decade. well he’s decided to break out and release some of the stuff he’s been recording under the moniker, stay on the bike. he recorded all the instruments/vocals minus the lovely female accompaniment which was provided by his friend, annah. honestly i was a bit skeptical at first, just hearing this song, but after two repeated listens i must admit i am a fan. those two listens led to about ten in a row. oh, and i should mention he is releasing an ep on april 10 which you can purchase via the stay on the bike bandcamp page.

cosmonaut on vacation “up to me”

Posted by doubter on Monday, April 1st, 2013

covac cover LTML v9 pink

happy monday. well at least happy for me cause im off, and its quite lovely here in baton rouge. although i am in the house, so thats mildly depressing. anyway, greg slamen formerly of through the sparks has a new band called cosmonaut on vacation, if you couldnt have guessed, and recently released a single on pals this is american music. the single is a precursor to their upcoming full length record entitled let the moment land which is being released by t.i.a.m on 4.23. one thing they are going to do is record a live ep with les nuby which will then be released after the record comes out. from what i gather quite a few t.i.a.m. bands are going to be doing this as well. great idea in my opinion.

you can buy this single on itunes, listen to it on spotify, etc.

gold and the rush live in baton rouge at mud and water, 3.30.13

Posted by doubter on Friday, March 29th, 2013

gold

top of the day. new orleans band gold and the rush are playing one of my new favorite places mud and water tomorrow night along with the diane lanes – love the name, and liam catchings & the jolly racket. i have yet to really hear them, and as much as it pains me to link to them, paste recently named them one of the louisiana bands that you need to hear. having only heard this song, i cant wholeheartedly vouch for much, but even with that said, i am loving this track which was part of a daytrotter session from earlier this year. i believe i shall be there, unless of course i fall asleep.

check out/buy some of their stuff via their bandcamp page

mincer ray “franki jo” & “perspiring winners”

Posted by doubter on Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

A Magnate's Reach Kopie

any time anything related to guided by voices comes across my inbox, i have to listen. its a knee jerk reaction. most of the time, the shit sucks, honestly, in the case of mincer ray, the complete opposite is true. keep in mind im not sure they are gbv fans, but “mincer ray” is a gbv song. so, im just putting two and two together here. and just like that, i read their bio which was at the bottom of the email and there is the guided by voices reference. now that we have that cleared up, mincer ray’s soon to be released, 5.31, a magnate’s reach, is pure quirky pop bliss. i wish i heard more of this kind of stuff cause other than the “alt-country” or whatever you want to call it, jangly askewed, is that even a word, pop is my second go to type of music. these guys are from germany, but from what i gather there are two americans and one brazilian in the group. as it turns out you can actually purchase said ep for a name your price type of deal via their bandcamp site. this is really freaking good, definitely recommended!

hemlock shaw “she in the backyard”

Posted by doubter on Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

hemlock

happy afternoon. sometimes stuff i hear may not be immediately up my alley, even though i like the style, it just may be missing something. thats kind of how i feel about new york’s hemlock shaw. there is definitely something here, i hear potential and thats why i am writing about him. i am trying to turn over a new leaf and write about stuff, as brief as it may be, that a lot of sites may not touch for whatever reason. i hear a lot of 90′s era elephant 6 collective type stuff in this song, which is perfectly cool with me considering i am a huge fan of that stuff. anyway, this song is off hemlock shaw’s 5 song ep/release the hell under the ground. i am not too sure where to purchase it, but i am definitely interested in hearing the entire thing.

magnolia electric co. live in citrus heights, ca, 5.17.09

Posted by doubter on Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

i posted this show originally in october of 2011, and i asked where was jason molina. i then read a post on the magnolia site that had confirmed what i had been hearing. at that point, i just assumed jason would come back to us. he would get over his sickness, and the world would be a better place for it. never in a million years did i think, or probably any one think it would end like this. honestly, im still very much upset over this, as i am sure a lot of folks are. his music meant the world to me, and spoke to me on levels that 99 percent of artists do not. heartbreaking, people. truly…

buy some of his stuff, all of which i cannot recommend enough.

get to know courtney jaye – noisetrade music sampler

Posted by doubter on Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

courtney

good afternoon, y’all. i really have to admit that noisetrade is quickly becoming one of my favorite sites, not only cause i like what their doing, but also exposing me to some artists, for free typically, that i may not have known about otherwise. in this case, good friend of mine and captains dead, courtney jaye has a sampler up on said site featuring two new songs from her upcoming record love and forgiveness, due out may 7, and a couple from her previous record, the exotic sounds of courtney jaye – which sounds like if nashville were in hawaii rather than its current locale. the latter also being one of my favorite records from 2010? i think? the video below is the first single from love and forgiveness, the mp3 is also included in the sampler.
