son volt 6.16.06 in chicago

Posted by gregor on Sunday, June 18th, 2006

i have always loved jay farrar in whatever incarnation there of. his work with tupelo was much stronger than tweedy’s, and i even think with their last record Okemah that the son volt catalogue is as strong as his former bandmates. although tweedy gets all the love, farrar silently piles on strong release after strong release. maybe i am high, but in the last year i have come to enjoy his work more than tweedy’s. its hard to not to lump the two together, and i know its lazy journalism. admittedly, i am a lazy fuck. here is their recent performance at chicago’s taste of randolph st on 6.16.06. i was at the first randolph st fest, morphine played RIP, and vowed never to go back.

1. endless war

2. jet pilot

3. 6 string belief

4. atmosphere

5. gramophone

6. damn shame

7. barstow

8. bandages and scars

9. loose string

10. indecision – new song, maybe

the remainder of the show will be up this evening. for i am heading out for a fathers day feast at my favorite atlanta area haunt, twains on church in decatur. i want to thank the taper Jerry E. for doing one hell of a job on this.

the constantines 4.9.05 @ lee's palace, toronto

Posted by gregor on Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

imo the greatest no bullshit rock record to come out the last 10 years has to be the constantine’s shine a light. shine a light came out of the stands in left field and completely knocked me over the head and i didnt wake up for 6 months. if you have not heard it buy it today, like now.

here is a recording from a show in the 05 from lee’s palace in toronto. the quality is ok, but it gives a good idea of what their live show is all about.

4. good nurse

5. insectivora

6. lizaveta

7. scoundrel babes

on this day mitch mitchell had a drink

Posted by gregor on Sunday, June 4th, 2006

all the way back in 2005, 3.17.05 to be specific, there was a gbv tribute show at emo’s in austin. this tribute featured 32 bands all doing their favorite gbv songs – with varying degrees of quality. i will be honest, most of this is pure shit, but i still would have loved to have been there. it’s is a fun listen, though, at least once.

01. Demons Are Real, Cocker Spaniels

02. Wire Greyhounds, Cocker Spaniels

03. Big Chief Chinese Restaurant, Cocker Spaniels

04. The Ascended Master’s Grogshop, Cocker Spaniels

05. Indian Fables, Cocker Spaniels

06. Twilight Campfighter, Cocker Spaniels

07. How Loft I Am?, Hellweg

08. Indian Was An Angel, Hellweg

09. Captain’s Dead, Hellweg

10. Weed King, Leprechaun

this can also be found on www dot dimeadozen dot org by searching for gbv hoot nite. posting the whole show will be a month long project, that is if there is any interest.
