hallelujah the hills “three minute mark”

Posted by doubter on Friday, May 17th, 2013

portrait_cover_large

you ever run into a band, that seemingly everything they put out, hits you in just the right spots? yeah, thats me and hallelujah the hills. they just put out a odds and sods double record that is made up of b-sides, non album tracks, etc and god damn if it aint better than most bands/artisits real records. it’s entitled portrait of the artist as a young trashcan, and i cant recommend it enough, if you havent figured that out. they are one of those bands that sure they’re shit is catchy, quirky, etc, but there is a lot of depth here, and some of it is quite heartbreaking. or maybe i am just overly sensitive? who knows, and really who cares? one of the best bands on the planet right now is all i am fucking saying. btw, i am absolutely addicted to this song right now.

top of the monday evening! trying to get back into this blogging thing, but admittedly its been tough. then again, for the past year or so i have been going in spurts, which i guess is better than nothing esp after almost 8 years of doing this. anyway, so my boys centro-matic are in the studio recording a new record which has a working title of take pride in your long odds. seems mildly fitting for the band, who i think is one of, if not the best bands playing today. i celebrate and love their entire catalogue, and there is no reason you shouldnt too. this here show is from 8.24.07 at the mercury lounge in nashville opening up for jason isbell. who, btw, sits in with the centro-matic for the entire set. much love to the original taper….

you can purhase/download their stuff here via amazon

1. love you just the same
2. in such crooked times
3. fountains of fire
4. to unleash the horses now

the clash “rat patrol from fort bragg”

Posted by doubter on Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

grandma

top of the day, fools! the past week has been kind of weird, thus the silence. my grandma, who wasnt in the best of health, but still alive and kicking, passed away last week. so, in her honour, here is the clash bootleg rat patrol from fort bragg. she was a huge clash fan, in fact she was at the show when the iconic photo for london calling was shot. thats a lie, but sounds cool. that picture was from the last time i saw her, which was sadly 2 years ago at my brothers wedding. sucks cause we are headed up to chicago for a 2 week stint in just a few weeks.

1. the beautiful people are ugly too
2. kill time
3. should i stay or should i go
4. rock the casbah
5. know your rights

deadstring brothers “like a california wildfire”

Posted by doubter on Friday, April 19th, 2013

dead

time to take a break from all this madness. here we have a song off deadstring brothers recently released bloodshot record, cannery row. i have had this record on my harddrive for the past couple weeks, and as per usual, i am just getting around to listening to it. few songs in, i am absolutely loving it. this appears to be maybe their 4th record. if youre a fan of early ryan adams, more bluesy stones stuff, etc you should absolutely dig this. anyone around these parts a fan, and is his other stuff as good? at this point definitely one of the best things i have heard in 2013.

buy cannery row via amazon for a measly 7 bucks.

aly tadros w/ ben balmer “whim”

Posted by doubter on Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

Aly-photo

i dont know much about aly tadros and her song featuring ben balmer, “whim,” but apparently it was inspired by streaking and alcohol. if you knew me way back when, i was known to streak through parties on a whim – no pun intended. in fact i wouldnt run through a house, or a backyard party, no, i would be naked, beer in hand and act like nothing was amiss. so, this is a song i could get behind just by the description alone. as it turns out, i like it a lot. ben has a great voice, but really aly’s voice is quite something else. i love those smoky, whiskey inflicted voices like that of aly. she’s got a new record out, her second, entitled the fits which was released earlier this year.

buy the fits via bandcamp

will oldham “gypsy he-witch” off weary engine blues: a tribute to jason molina

Posted by doubter on Friday, April 12th, 2013

GRAVE101

happy friday! i am not gonna muddy this up with a bunch of words and stuff. so here is the info on this molina cover compilation/tribue being put out by graveface records, which i believe is due out on 4.23.

we’re calling this collection weary engine blues, named after a piece of artwork by molina that serves as the cover of this cd release. confirmed contributions so far from: john vanderslice, mark kozelek, hospital ships, lucas oswald, jonathan meiburg, damien jurado, dreamend, brown bird, haunt the house, tw walsh, phil elverum, alisdair roberts, scout niblett, jeffrey lewis, will johnson, the wave pictures, allo darlin, darren hayman, will oldham, herman dune and many more amazing musicians. huge thanks to hugh noble and william schaff for helping get this together so quickly. know that 100% of the profits are going directly (and immediately) to jason molina’s incredible family.

i took the liberty of taking out the info about the screenprint that accompanied the cd cause its sold out… either way, its a double cd made up of a shit ton of of awesome artists, and all proceeds going to jason’s family. i believe you may be able to purchase it, already, via their bandcamp page.

ronnie fauss “i dont see you”

Posted by doubter on Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

ronnie

top of the day, jerkballs! i hate being late to the game when it comes to some artists, but i cant know about everything no matter how hard i try. this time im talking about dallas based artist ronnie fauss and his record i am the man you know im not – great title. granted, i have not heard said record, but this song, see below, i am totally digging. the record came out last year, but has been recently re-released via new west records’ imprint normaltown. a bunch of people who’s opinion i respect have talked about it including my girl sloane at country fried rock – which if you never visited/listened/read i cant recommend her enough, no depression, etc… if you dig the likes of isbell, dbt, steve earle, etc you will definitely dig mr fauss. cant wait to hear the entire thing.

buy the record via amazon
