captains dead's top 5 at the kinda midway point, 2010

was thinking bout this today. so i figured i’d put my picks to paper, or internets as it were. there’s been a lot of great stuff, but not too much that has that amazed me. now the question being, would i rather have 2 or 3 amazing records, and the rest so-so, or 10 great records, but maybe no amazing records? i think i would take the latter, but thats just my feeling right now.

the futurebirds record keeps getting better and better with each listen, and i am more than super pissed that i missed em last week. if you cant find something to like or love about it, we probably wouldnt be friends. american aquarium’s small town hymns falls into the same category. first listen i thought it was nice enough, but now that im a few months into it, man its a great piece of no bullshit rock n roll. same with gaslight anthem’s american slang, which i keep hearing isnt as good as their first two, but man it scratches me right where i itch. i dont care if it may sound half-baked, or samey, cause its an awesome summer record, or maybe the soundtrack to kickin some ass, and takin some names, and best played full blast. glossary’s feral fire, well they’re just a perfect model of consistency. i hate to use the term, but “all killer, no filler” on feral fire. the real surprise though is palomino. as i stated a couple of days ago, i have dug their previous output, but this record has really hit home. my co-worker today stated that if he had to listen to it for more than an hour, he’d go crazy. its manic, for sure, but there’s a calm if you listen close enough.

The Futurebirds put on a rockin’ live show. I had never heard of them before but was fortunate enough to be at the bar where they were playing over the 4th of July weekend. They absolutely blew my mind. They have so much fun while playing on stage and dance just as much as the audience. Do yourself a favor and go see this band if you get chance. Great choice!
