kent, ohio’s beaten awake are an interesting lot. well, interesting in the musical sense, im not sure how interesting they are as individuals. the dudes that make up beaten awake have been doing up the local kent scene in bands like harriet the spy, the party of helicopters, the man i fell in love with, and “new” terror class. all of whom, i have never heard of, but if you’re from the area you may have an idea of what beaten awake are all about. for those that arent, i’m not gonna be much help as per usual. i was driving around listening their recently released record on fat possum, thunder$troke and during this drive they really sounded like built to spill doin crazy horse. after repeated listens, i still think they definitely have some built to spill leanings, but im not sure where i got crazy horse from. im still trying to figure these guys out after about a dozen listens, but there is no doubt that they’ve made a really good record. sonically its sounds as if was recorded through a heavy beach blanket, or it maybe just my listening devices giving me that impression. if you’re familiar with wheat’s fantastically underrated medeiros, you may know what im talkin bout. anyway, yeah, definitely good stuff and definitely worth checkin out.

thunder$troke is out now and im assuming it can be found just about everywhere
