Devotchkas

Devotchkas was a four-piece American punk band from New York City. Their name is derived from the novel/movie A Clockwork Orange where "devotchka" is the Nadsat word for "girl" (originally from the Russian word of the same meaning). An all-girl group, the band was formed by three friends in 1996. The early period saw drummers come and go, including Jon from The Krays. Wanting a regular drummer, they eventually recruited Gabrielle to complete the line up.

In 1998 they released their first EP. Containing only four songs, it did sell 5,000 copies, a somewhat surprisingly high number. They were signed to Punkcore Records shortly after and released two more albums.

The singer Stephanie left the band in 1999, being replaced by JJ. Consequently, The Devotchkas changed their name to The 99′s two years after. JJ did the vocals on their 2001 release Live Fast, Die Young, but when she left the band in 2002 and was replaced by Jessica, the band reverted their name to Devotchkas.
