silk lung's random thoughts, plus free ep

Posted by gregor on Monday, August 31st, 2009

silklung

jim orso is silk lung, and he lives in brooklyn. he’s got a 4 song ep, just a thread, up on his site that for a limited time you can download for free. of course i still stand by the fact that just cause its free doesnt make it awesome or even remotely listenable or worthy of wasting your precious bandwidth. in mr orso’s case, he’s definitely worth the 2 minute download, and then the 11+ minute listen of said ep. he recently got a very nice write up on npr’s all songs considered, and i like him too. good stuff, recommended….

download just a thread, here.

the mountain goats' genesis 3:23

Posted by gregor on Monday, August 31st, 2009

tmg

if i were to had come up with a top 50 of the decade list, i know for damn sure the mountain goats would have had at least 3 records taking up some space, most notably heretic pride, tallahassee and the sunset tree. i am still questioning my reasoning for leaving at least tallahassee out of the top 30. what is done is done, i suppose? anyway, mr darnielle and company have a new record coming out on 10.6 on 4ad called the life of the world to come. the record is religious in nature, but not a getting up on a soap box and damning us all hell, but more dealing with biblical imagery and themes of the like.

you can stream the record here

music to the price is right

Posted by gregor on Monday, August 31st, 2009

Bob Barker

im not a smart man, this has already been established, but what i lack in what one could call general intellect i make up for it in general bullshit knowledge. you know the kind smarts that wont make me any money, ever. sure, out at a bar i can impress some 22 year old co-ed with my knowledge of saved by the bell, the latest and juiciest celebrity gossip, really lame bar tricks and a host of other useless knowledge, but again all that nonsense doesnt do me any good. i do hold one particular bit of knowledge that could do me some good, but first i would have to travel to los angeles, then get tickets to the price is right and then get chosen to “come on down” cause i do have an uncanny ability to randomly know how much stuff costs or at least have an idea. im not gonna say that a 15 piece all-clad stainless steel set costs $500 bucks when its closer to $1500 like some of these fools that get chosen. this has been a gift that has graced/burdened me since i was a wee lad. we all have our crosses we must bare, i know. why am i mentioning all of this? well i happened to stumble upon a fairly comprehensive collection of price is right music/sound effects. my favorite of which, and it has been cracking me up for a few days, is the “losing horns.” taking the music out of the context of the show is slightly strange and unnerving.

heavy feather's would you

Posted by gregor on Saturday, August 29th, 2009

heavyfeathers

i dont know much about the ladies of heavy feather, other than they used to be known as jackpot city, they hail from athens, ga and they released a self titled record earlier this year. actually, the more i read (yay reading!) about the ladies of heavy feather, the more i am impressed with the company they keep. long list short, they’ve worked with michael stipe, mike mills, dave barbe, john neff of dbt, widespread’s bassist dave schools and ben mize formerly of the counting crowes, amongst others. now granted, not all of these folks worked on this record, but if they were able to convince these folks to work with em in the past, thats saying something. check em out, pretty cool stuff.

the woodlands' summerland

woodlands

about a year and a half ago, i was fumbling blindly through a seemingly endless number of myspace band profiles in search of something. that something i was looking for, i havent the slightest? i never really do that sort of thing, so maybe i was really bored or something? i did happen across a band that day that i immediately dug. dug so much that i bookmarked em on delicious, see here, another thing i try to utilize but dont really use that often. i had meant to contact em, but never got around to it for one lame reason or another. then a couple days ago, i got an email from samuel, who makes up half of the husband and wife duo that is the woodlands – his wife hannah, makes up the other half, by the way. i knew the name sounded familiar but im slow and it wasnt until i checked out their myspace page that i recognized their stuff and pics. crazy how life works sometimes. they have a newly released self titled record, that i have yet to listen to, but is sitting on my harddrive, and i hear great things about it. i will say that “summerland” is really quite lovely and the first time i heard it brought back memories of being young and running around with my friends in the summer nights trying to catch fireflies. i always love when songs can bring back a rush of feelings/memories.
